Ian:

Your "wee" pen looks like it might have a flexy nib. Apply a wee bit o' pressure and it the tunes separate that is "flex". It lets you write with thick and thin lines, to give your words dimention and interest. Welcome to FPN!

Hi Sinistral1

Wait, what is this "flexy" of which you speak? I am intrigued.

I had another bash with the wee pen while applying different pressure on downstrokes, and it wasn't really much different.

I dont think the nib is flexy as you say, however, this "flexy" idea sounds interesting to me and would like to give it a go.

Are pens with flexy nibs easy to get? or a they a kind of specialist thing, found on vintage pens, or expensive pens for example.

Duke Bamboo - Inked with Chesterfield Antique Crimson. It has a mother-of-pearl piece in the top of the cap. The nib is imprinted with a crown and the Duke name. The black section has some pearlescence throughout.

Ian

Most flexible nibs are found on vintage pens of all makes and models (and prices). They are usually 14kt gold, but I have some 18kt semi-flexible nibs on my French made Waterman Gentleman pens made in the 1970s and 1980s. There are also some Noodler pens (the Ahab and several others) with flexible nibs, a modern pen that is fairly inexpensive ($20 here in the US).

As a long time Calligrapher, I adore mine, because I can quite easily write script that it very pretty and don't have to fuss with a dip pen, making my own ink, etc. It is a very deliberate writing style, I can't write "normally" with my full flex nibs, they flex too easily. It's like writing with a piece of cooked pasta.

Don't push your wee pen too hard or it will rebel and your non or semi-flexible nib will teach you a lesson. This is an example from a Waterman 3V with a full flex nib, a lever filler from the 1930s that I got for $50 here on FPN about a year ago. I have managed to get pens on eBay for less than $50, but some have not been "keepers".

I am lefthanded. The wide part of the letters result from applying pressure to the point of the nib on the downstroke, and the thin lines are the upstrokes with as little pressure as possible.

Breathe. Take one step at a time. Don't sweat the small stuff. You're not getting older, you are only moving through time. Be calm and positive.

Today, I've been writing with my 5 newly bought old pens ..... Pelikan Tortoise Gunther Wagner, Select, AA, Kreuzner and ??? I payed the Pelikan (@ a very low price) and received the others for .... free)

I like writing with those old stuffs and bringing them back to life .....

The question is ... which one will be my next pen ????? https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/267952-which-one-will-be-your-next-fountain-pen/page-18

The Pelikan Tortoise Gunther Wagner pen is beautiful, and I really like what it does to your handwriting.

Amber, every time you post a picture of your desk, I look for your crystal inkwell. I spotted it at the right on the second shelf up (I have it's twin minus the stopper.) It almost feels like a game of "Where's Waldo?" - "Spot the Inkwell".
