I think I have read every review of all most every black fountain pen ink I can find.

Here's my list of requirements in order of importance:

1. No nib creep! Quink and Eels creep. Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo doesn't.

2. Black black black. Because the line is so fine I understand getting a dark black line that fine may be hard, but hopefully it's as dark as can be and not grey.

3. I'd like for it to clean off easily from the inside of the Lamy 2000 ink window and my clothes if a drop hits my pants when refilling or something.

I'm avoiding inks that have been described as really wet like Aurora and Noodler's (all) because I think they may promote nib creep.

The leading candidates for my order are:

Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Black

Namiki Black - though it may be too light/grey

Pelikan Edelstein Black Onyx.

thoughts?

I can recommend Edelstein Onyx, but then it is the only black I have in my collection. Having said that I've tried both Pilot / Namiki black (cartridges), and an old bottle of MB black (in the rounded boot bottle -- but past the official use by date). I didn't get on well with the MB, it reminded me too much of a black vacuum worm hole on the page that sucked up energy (I can live with being called crazy). I've not tried the 4001. The Pilot/Namiki black, while smelling nice, is lighter than the Onyx. I've had no nib creep issues with the Onyx. I hope that helps

ETA: I use the Onyx in my Pilot Prera M, which would probably be called an EF according to Western standards. It looks black, not grey.

I ordered a bottle of Pelikan 4001 Black because it sounds dry, very black and cheap. There are some common terms used in reviews that I need to be educated of the full meanings. First lubrication. I know that means it comes out of the feed well, helps pistons, and feels smooth at the tip to paper contact point, but does heavy lubrication also mean possible nib creep?

The Edelstein sounds very good, but I'd like to try a dry ink and see how that goes. If it skips then I will try either Edelstein black or more likely Aurora for the darkness.

Finalist: You know you can get samples from Goulet Pens to try the different inks. They are fairly inexpensive. Anderson Pens also sells samples, too. For what it's worth, in my experience, nib creep has been more about the nib itself than the ink I use.

Finalist - how about Lamy black? I do like a shiny nib, that's why I have a Kleenex close by.

Finalist, why not trade some of your doodles for ink? I'm sure I have a black around here somewhere.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Kinda a new pen for me. Its a shorty, but I like the larger third cap ring. I am also getting used to the nib.

Finalist - I have some of the Lamy black if you want to try it out?

On another note = I have a question. Why do pens railroad??? Is it the user? the nib? still figuring out the phenomenon.

Thanks for the tip. I missed the sample idea!

I've read Richard Binder's page on nib creep and understand it. However, Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo doesn't creep in my L2K nor my Falcon, but Quink black, Manuscript Black and Eel Inks all creep badly.

What elegant, beautiful penmanship! Very impressive! And your Waterman Red Ripple is truly wonderful!

Soap makes ink more lubricated. What makes it more dry?

Try evaporating some of the water from it? Place it in a warm area for a while with saran wrap over the mouth of the bottle and the water droplets will adhere to that...

I used that to thicken one of my custom brew inks out and make it darker.

So, you have that Homo Sapiens ...... I hope you will enjoy it .... As I told you, it.s a fantastic pen.

I use to flush and then store my pen when it runs out of ink and choose another one from my collection. Yesterday, I refilled my Homo

Sapiens instead of storing it .... Maybe am I in love with it ?

Eventually an 11"x17" version will be inked.

STunning!

Finalist: It's a silly way to think of it, but dry inks are just lacking or low in lubricants. Iron Gall inks tend to be pretty dry. Those of us who use our pens and inks for other purposes than writing get to find out how the various pen and ink combinations behave in ways that the original makers never intended, and we enter uncharted territory.
