Don't Just Tell Us About The Pen You're Using, *show* Us!

A while ago a very kind FPN member sent me a message asking if I would like a WHOLE BOX of my favourite brown cartridges - Parker Mocha.

I can't thank him enough. I've tried many a time to mix a version up myself and match it but never really nailed it.

I think I only had three cartridges left when he messaged me. Talk about timing!

I sketched this with him in mind - It was portrait attempt (see I told you tringle it was my Achilles heal), it went all wrong so I turned into a generic "icon".

The Parker 45 medium nib is not a favourite for sketches but it's my "Mocha Parker" - it's only ever had Mocha in it and have kept it so.

I left the room to make a coffee only to return and find Rosa (Bruce's mum) sat ON the sketch.

Hmm . . . She must be thinking "why didn't he use The Ahab or the Mont Blank 3-42"

grainweavel, I'm certain you'll end up with some Oxblood. It's a lovely lovely red.

I use the same Vac 700 and ink combo as you but never dared to touch my nib, it's gorgeous. I hope yours works out :)

I like that sketch, I think it captures the subject well

tringle asked how I liked my new Parker 61. Well, I know that the 61 is considered a jealous pen - it can be reluctant to start unless you use it every day. But this fellow doesn't like to be left alone for more than a few hours! Once it gets going, it's a smooth, wet writer.

Because it's a bit fussy and a bit wet, it's more of a letter-writing pen than a pen for notes and tasks at work. Which is rather at odds with using it every day, of course.

So this is the one pen - of my ten or so - which really requires any fussing. But I'm willing to fuss, since I've a soft spot for the Parker 61. And it's dead handsome.

The Pilot Metropolitan is a revelation: under $25 - bricks-and-mortar Canadian price - and you get a fine, slippery-smooth nib in a handsome pen which includes a converter. Astounding.

Ooo, mhphoto they're gorgeously flexy.

Hope your migrane has passed :(

Thought I'd take advantage of the fact that all my portraits look "wrong" and try some actual icon sketching, where looking "wrong" is the norm.

I like the idea but MUST take a lot longer on the work and not rush it - I don't have to finish in one sitting and two coffees.

Tas, it is very interesting to see a pen-drawn rendering of a classic iconographical type.. I quite like it (although - no offence meant - I am not sure you got the colours right, according to Holy Fathers.. :) ) I'd like to see more. It is something I was thinking about lately - although I had a different technique in mind, but the idea was the same - a modern simplified rendering of the old images..

Above all shadows rides the Sun
And Stars for ever dwell:
I will not say the Day is done,
Nor bid the Stars farewell.

This pen is rapidly becoming one of my two favorite pens. It originally had a medium Bock nib that was nice, but not really special. Richard Binder was closing out some ready-ground stub nibs that were the correct Classic Pens nibs for this pen so I bought one and I'm very happy with it.

The ink is Visconti Black.

Take two aspirin, get some sleep, and write us in the morning.

Hi LP, there are no end to the interesting characters here; it's nice to have you. I'd post a written reply - something witty, no doubt - but I'm on my iPhone and typing with my thumbs seems to stifle all expression. I keep a log of letters written and am even for the month but still far behind in terms of replies I need to send. Cheers, David
