A Christmas plating experiment - one week later.

This is a Brause, No. 76, Iserlohn or "Rose" nib that has been gold plated for corrosion-protection and then rhodium plated at the edges and contacts to reduce wear.

The first few days were in iron gall but now it is seated, round-the-clock, in an Ahab demonstrator to see if the plating works ;)

Interesting, did you plated the nib by yourself?

If not where did you get it plated and how much did it cost?

Is your Ahab feed able to keep up even you flex it more than this? (I guess you had to modify it)

Hi Pterodactylus.

Hope you had a wonderful Christmas.

My sketches are just for fun and I know nothing of technique.

I hate using pencils, they send a funny feeling up my arm! I always commit with ink straight away. I then simply wash over the areas I feel need it with water.

This sadly is why I have such a hard time finding the "right" ink to sketch with. Whilst falling in love with many inks to write with, when washed over most breakdown and look totally different. Caran d'Ache Magnetic Blue for instance is easily one of my favourite inks to correspond with but produces a wishy washy colour when attacked with water :(

Sailor Jentle Black is my new favourite for sketching - see link https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/205970-13-black-ink-under-water/?p=2856530

Totally besotted; can't stop scribbling with this fella. It's a total joy to look at, hold and use. I'm finding any old excuse to play with it.

Happy New Year people, glad to have FPN back again.

Pen: Visconti Homo Sapiens Bronze EF nib - Thanks Santa (and mhphoto for your advice)

Ink: My Sepia Grey Black - ( 3 parts Rohrer & Klingner Sepia, 1 part Diamine Grey, 1 part Noodler's Bullet Proof Black)

Paper: Stillman & Birn Epsilon sketchbook - takes anything you throw at it - 10/10

that is beautiful, both the sketchwork and the pen. When you wash the mix (I am assuming you are using a wet swab or brush over the inked drawing) does the sepia and grey come out in equal parts? Do you let the ink dry before the wash? Whatever you are doing, it looks awsome to me...

If you think everything is going well... you obviously have no idea what is really going on!

Thanks RW.

The pen is indeed beautiful but so robust that I treat it (well almost) no differently to my Ahabs or Nib Creepers.

You assume right, I just wash over the dried ink with a wet brush.

With this mix the sepia & grey wash out equally and the Noodler's black more or less stays put.

That is nice! I like the way the brand and model of the nib shows through the clear plastic of the Ahab. To re-ask Pterodactylus' question, did you do the plating yourself? If so What process did you use???

Left: a Mystery Watermans's (Made in Canada); the semi-hooded nib, proportions and cap are all very much like a Taperite, but it's not a level filler (it's got an aerometric-like pump filler).

Right: a Lamy 2000 with an unknown nib size (I tried it at the shop, liked it, and forgot to ask :/ ).

Tas,

Your sketch and wash is full of atmosphere. A really nice pen too.

Pterodactylus & 79spitfire,

Thanks, I plated myself using small swabs and a 4V power supply. The solutions are from here http://www.goldn.co.uk/category/pen-plating-solution/. The Ahab didn't need any change so it is fully reversible. I just used boiled water to get the feed soft and matched it to the nib. The feed is very generous and adding some gum Arabic in the ink will help get more width. To get the nib to show through the demonstrator I wiped the root with silicone grease - keeping it away from the feed.

May I - gauchely - comment on my own post?

Seeing this photo, I'm struck by how similar these two pens look: the overall shape, the proportions of the caps and sections, the mostly-hooded nibs. Yet they still seem to belong to different fountain-pen eras ...

Huh.

Getting bit by the pen bug is not cheap but I'm having such an amazing time and fun trying out all of these new pens :)!

Ain't that the truth. I'm totally blown away by mine.

Thanks mhphoto - I wouldn't have done it without your nudge.

Loving that Esterbrook nib and how you use it. As for MBLeonardo Red Chalk, cor! I'm just about to Google some. Looks wonderful.
Another member here, amberleadavis, recommended their Toffee Brown and I'm loving that a lot.

This may well be the year of less pens more ink . . .

Wow! I'm at a loss for words. I've only made it through a couple pages, and I had to stop to catch my breath.
