SJH, You think your handwriting needs improvement?

Greeting Uncle Red and thank you, however, this is not my 'Normal' writing yet, and it really does not come easy.

In fact, if you saw my 'normal' writing you'd probably ask me for medical advice!

{Sorry Jazzdoc, I don't mean to be mean}

Cyber6 and Akustyk, that's Sustainable Earth by Staples brand paper. I find it's erratic, sometimes it's as good as Zoniguana says it is and sometimes it's not. I was thinking of trying Black N' Red notebooks next.

Spot on! I currently have a bad batch that bleeds and feathers. My last lot was brilliant and I had no trouble at all.

Sadly that's exactly what I've been experiencing. Good thing I'm enamored with Salix and Scabiosa at the moment. These inks don't mind the 'lesser' batch. I have at least 36 more pads, and I'm hoping that not all are the lesser kind!

I'm rather proud of myself that I can now choose inks and pens to suit the paper--thanks to the knowledge shared on this thread :)

Steve, it looks like you are well on your way to making your writing nice enough they would ask you to teach the course. If anyone is in need of remedial work it is me - can I borrow the book after you finish? :)

DC, more snow! Ugh. You have a dog named Parker? Do you have cats named Visconti, Omas, Montegrappa and Stipula? A fish named Waterman?

The Montegrappa is really beautiful but could that cap be any longer?

(Macniven & Cameron Waverly Eyedropper ..... P.W. Akkerman Hofkwartier Groen)

Translation:

Collegeblock = Spiral Note Pad --> using a Clairefontaine 90g/m2

I really like this paper.

But it´s not a wet pen alone, as you can see in my scan the pen was too wet on the first 3 rows to shade really good.

It has to be wet but not too wet, using a flex pen helps as the flow vary during flex.

IMHO also when you are using a stiff nib a variation of the pressure helps to get good shading as the flow will vary also on a stiff nib with the pressure.

But I think the main key is the paper, in general as smoother the better the shading.

BTW:

I don´t like this Waverly pen, either it is too wet or too dry and starts railroading.

When I got it the flow was like a waterfall, almost unusable (bought it as NOS on eBay, I think they are still available).

Then I tinkered arround with the nib, with the nib position on the feed, heat adapting the feed,....

Finally the flow was not like a waterall anymore.

When I start writing it is still too wet, the feed saturates much during storage (also had dripping into the cap some times).

Then it writes a couple of lines very nice, I really appreciate the nib during this short phase.

And then it starts to railroad and is too dry.

In my experience not a nice pen at all as can´t manage to get the feed/flow really under control.

My most spectacular shading inks are currently:

Noodler´s Apache Sunset

Noodler´s Golden Brown

P.W. Akkerman Hofkwartier Groen

De Atramentis Steel Blue

Rohrer & Klingner Salix

Rohrer & Klingner Scabiosa

But of course only in a suitable wet nib.

E.g. Hofkwartier Groen does not shade at all in some nibs.

@Dcpritch

Sorry to hear that your dog was struck by a car.

I know how this can feel, almost like loosing a family member.

Some time ago the same happened with one of our cats.

I face the same experience like you. I don´t know how many pens I have. They fit in my wonderful 50 pens 5 drawer cabinet from Geoff (pencase.co.uk) so they must be less than 50.

My wife always give me the "evil eye" when she notice that I get a new pen.

I try to avoid this, but not due to stopping buying pens, instead trying to avoid that she notice a new pen arrival wink.gif

The Apache Sunset is really a extraordinary shading ink.

Now you made me really jealous with your 138......... :gaah:

UncleRed: the pen i was using before is made from Australian minerals, i think its mainly copper but if you see it in real life it has streaks of silver, red and blue through it [: Heres a cool picture my dad took of it: 644421_524242940959275_1810473227_n.jpg

Really liking the Golden Brown ink in the Jackdaw... It's a *little* slower to dry on the Clairefontaine (especially punctuation marks, which always seem to be a bit wetter), but still very well behaved, and just a beautiful ink...

Sheen? Pt did you mention sheen?!

fpn_1366659414__pelikan_m800_bb_stub_4_1024x769.jpg

Pt, I have a bottle of Diamine Sargasso Sea - I absolutely love the color and have experienced the same sheen you show above (great job capturing it so well in a photo!), but it takes soooo long to dry, and even then it is susceptible to smudges. Is your experience the same?

Nice

The blue pen and blue ink is a very nice complementary shade ...

Lovely photos too, brings out the beauty of those shades and hues...

And the sheen of that ink is indeed mesmerizing.

I am sure in no small part due to the TR paper too. :-)

Enjoy your journal. :-)

Scrutineer44, Waterman still makes Florida Blue, it's just called "Serenity Blue" now. Same exact ink.

You can join me and others and still call it "Florida Blue" if you like. :)
