Been reading about pens (since I knew no one close) on the net since AOL/CServe days... This is, unquestionably, the BEST. THREAD. EVER!

Yes, uncle red it is too bad Joon closed. It was a pretty pricey store but it sure was fun to drool over all those beautiful pens.

Boy that Havana Brown produced quite a mess. It was written with a Estie SJ with a 2668. Never seen a Waterman ink behave like that before - but it sure did not like that particular paper!

Fool me once, shame on you.

Fool me twice; damn

There goes that fox again.

As always dcpritch your photographs and pens are fantastic. I enjoy the stub thread as well.

After reading through this thread with all its fantastic pens and nibs, I'm kind of getting an inferiority complex! My Lamy Safaris seem very entry-level in comparison. I need to branch out in my pens I think! I just love brightly-colored pens, and a lot of the more traditional brands just seem ugly to me. :P

Please don't take this the wrong way. Safaris are pretty much entry level pens. That having been said, they work great every time. Mine (I have 5 FPs) never skip and always write when put to paper. I have many pens, most of which cost more than the Safaris, some WAY more than the Safaris, but none out perform the Safaris in their mission profile.

The Safaris are not bling, they are not flex nibs and they won't get you into a club, but they do what they are designed to do and do it well, every time. Unless someone sees you using your pen, when you are done, if they look at the writing, they will only be able to tell it came from a FP. They may be able to guess at the nib size, but not the material it is made from and not the pen it is attached to.

I have over 120 pens to choose from each day. The majority of these are substantially more expensive than the Safari, yet, for my personal journaling and personal writing, what I have inked up right now is a Safari with a 1.5 nib. Of all my stub nibs, this one works the best. Many have to get started for down strokes so they may leave a little section that is more a smudge than inked. My Parker oblique is more of a torture device than a nib. It has a very limited sweet spot and then you are into scratch city.

I use all my pens, but there are places I would take a Safari that I would never even think about taking a more expensive pen. There is a certain freedom that brings. I have expensive LE FPs that require more maintenance than a Safari ever will. Some are level fillers, which are great when they work, but when the sac ossifies, you have to spend more on them than the cost of a new Safari just to put them to running order again. With the Safari, assuming no abuse, all you should ever need to do is clean it and ink it. Over a long, long time, you may wear out a converter - $8, big deal. On the off chance that you ever write out a nib, $15, again, big deal.

I guess I have posted all this to say - if you like your Safaris, use them. There is no reason to feel that they are substandard or inferior.

If you think everything is going well... you obviously have no idea what is really going on!

I follow this thread daily, but I haven't posted in a few weeks. 'Entry level' is one person's opinion. The key is writing with something that you enjoy using. I have pens ranging in price from $ to $$$$ and I use them all. In fact, some of the lower price pens outperform the higher priced ones ... by a wide margin! So, no pen is inferior to any other ... use what you enjoy ... proudly!! Enjoy the sensation ... ink flowing from pen to paper!
