In Paper Heaven 完全

SamCapote

Recommended Posts

Let me join to sing the praises of Tomoe River paper. I love how my F and XF nibs show their full potential on this beautiful, thin, cream colored Japanese paper, which has now ruined me for all other writing papers. This paper is a must to all who like writing (and receiving) long letters. I received my sample package from Penhand, whom I highly recommend.

I, too, have reached the paper heaven, that the users have described on this thread. :)

Thanks to PenHand and all his efforts to provide us with opportunities to try this outstanding paper I have in my grubby little paws two packets of TR A5 size paper of cream and white.

I love this stuff. It's nice!

Someone requested a scan or at least a photo of what this paper looks like with some ink on it, so I'll add mine to the fray.

First, an un-flash photo of a sample sheet with one extra sheet underneath it:

And even though it's horrible, a flash photo:

I really like this paper, and it's got excellent properties, but I may be looking for some paper that's a teeny bit heavier. Something such as Kokuyo's High-grade MIO paper. It's not as good as TR to be sure, but my aforementioned grubby paws are a little prone to crinkling things. I'll have to give it some thought.

Then again I may just buy a ream of TR. What's the world without a lark or two?

Cheers,

The small TR pad arrived today. I've enjoyed using this paper. I believe the Tomeo Japanese paper is, also, used in the Madori Traveler's Notebook, item #013, Lightweight Blank Paper Refill, 128 pages sells for about $7. The size of the insert blank journal for regular size Madori Traveler's Notebook is about 4 1/4" x 8 1/4". A smaller Passport size is, also, available. There is some noticeable ink show from the verso side, but no bleeding or feathering. High quality durable smooth paper, which highlights the color of your ink.

It's showing up everywhere on the internet at places like Goulet Pens, Baum-Kuchen, Misc-Store, ResorShop, European Paper, The Journal Shop, Travelers-Notebook, and My Maido.

Best Wishes, coffeetoofull

About that Midori Traveler's Notebook Refill ...

see <http://www.midori-japan.co.jp/tr/english/trnotebook/refill/>

013 Lightweight paper notebook (Regular size)

Refill made of light, thin paper.

Containing twice the pages of regular refills (128 pages), this is recommended for users who do a lot of writing.

Blank: 128 pages, lightweight paper (stitch bound)

H210 x W110 x D4mm

http://www.midori-japan.co.jp/tr/english/trnotebook/refill/images/refill-index-standard-013_img_01.gif

-- does anyone here know directly, or have strong evidence (side-by-side comparison),

whether Midori is using the actual Tomoe River paper? Or just something similar?

If it's Tomoe River, is it the cream or the white?

Midori calls out and describes their MD and DP papers, but not the Lightweight,

near the bottom of the page.

And is there actually a Passport Size refill with Lightweight paper?

Thanks!

Steve

The Midori paper is the same weight, colour, and feel of the TR paper. In my opinion it is the same. You might contact the Tomoega Company and see if they have a contract with Midori http://www.tomoegawa.co.jp .

A few weeks ago I received a sheaf of cream TR paper from FPNer PJohnP, and I was able to compare the paper to to paper inside the Midori Traveler's Notebook Lightweight Paper notebook refill. The weight and feel are the same but the color is not, although of course it could be that the TR paper I have is cream and the one in the Midori is white.

Here are some photos to show the color difference:

I don't have the white TR paper to compare the notebook to, though. Perhaps someone else can post photos?

Anyone know where I can get a sample of this paper in the UK

I've shipped a bunch of paper to the UK, so could be one of those folks could send you a sample. If you want a sample from the US send first class international, see my classified.

The small TR pad arrived today.

Please tell us (me) what exactly the notebook is called: The Passport-sized refill with the TR-alike paper, and where I can get it.

I see multiple models available, but after seeing the bleedthrough on the Field Notes, my inability to find Clairefontaine 3.5 x 5.5 Life Unplugged anywhere for less than 3x retail, and no clear details from most sellers on what paper is in their passport-sized offerings, I'm getting a little flusterated.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Has anybody ever checked out this website? Seems to be the US office of Tomoegawa. Sorry, if this had already come up; I didn't read the entire topic and just found this when looking for a European office... On this page, there is even a direct mail address.

Maybe try this Amazon Vendor??

http://www.amazon.com/Travelers-Notebook-Refill-13-Lightweight/dp/B001BEITMA#productDetails

This is not the passport size though. I have ordered Japanese notebooks from this seller before, so maybe contacting the store might be worth a try.

I've tried to contact them here in the US and I believe one other FPN member has as well. They appear to not be bringing paper over, and certainly not for the retail trade.

I don't believe bulk paper for printers (think big rolls) is shipped much around the world just because it is big, heavy and there are more local paper sources readily available.

Keep in mind most paper used now-a-days is consumed by computer printouts (mostly inkjet and laser). We (fountain pen / specialty uses) are such a tiny group to be inconsequential to any commercial paper mill.

Here's a link to a thread about how easy and inexpensive it was for me to sew up a few booklets:

https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/247519-finally-found-tn-passport-tr-inserts-made-them/

There's a link around here somewhere that shows the pattern to sew to get all the little registers together.

Best of luck!

Appreciate the link but Midori, though they use very similar paper in their full-size 013 refill like you showed me, does not make passport-sized refills with their lightweight paper. I've checked a lot of different vendors with no success.

What I ended up doing was taking a pad of Tomoe River paper and turned it into exactly what I did want. I have enough paper to make a lot of these little guys, and I was surprised how easy it was to create a very good quality notebook.

Thanks for the info! I've been following Earthdawn's tutorial and TMLee's beautiful handmade journals thread. Next I'll try the Coptic stitching. This is too much fun!
