In Paper Heaven 完全

I received my paper from Penhand yesterday and it was packaged great and the shipping was unbelievably fast. I want to thank him once again for doing this for all the FPN members, I never would have been able to experience this amazing paper without him.

I am writing a new book and have been searching for months for the perfect folder/binder/notebook system that I could use to write the entire novel in. So, for all the people in the same boat as me that have been searching for a good folder idea, here is what I have done with this amazing paper.

I first ordered a leather screwpost binder from oldleather.com. Here is a link http://www.oldleather.com/catalog/item/841920/4760071.htm

I was able to put about 400 sheets in the binder with the included screw posts and the best thing is, the tamoe paper stops the one thing that has always stopped me from making this kind of notebook. With most papers, by the time you get halfway through, the papers that you have already written on and have turned start to get so think that the second half is useless. But, with the tamoe paper, because it is so thin, i can flip to the last page and the paper lays flat enough to be useable.

I will post pics tonight of the entire setup. I have spent hundreds on different systems and papers looking for something that worked perfect for me and this is it.

(As always the standard, I am not affiliated with oldleather.com or penhand in anyway, just a very happy customer from both services)

If anyone is interested, I just posted a classified offering TR pads (6 inches x 8-5/8 inches, 50 sheets each) and regular TR writing sheets (6.1 inches x 8-5/8 inches).

I've been corresponding with TR for awhile, and I can't decide whether I like the full-size sheets (been writing on the lined ones recently) or the writing sheets shown above that are roughly half the size of the full sheets. What are others using?

"What are others using?"

I have used the full sheets for a couple letters, I'm just a 'full sheet' kind of guy, plus I tend toward broader and stub nibs so the scale of the paper seems to jive better with these 'big writers'. And too, I don't have envelopes yet that work very well with smaller or half sheets, but I'm working on that.

Given the characteristics of this paper I am thinking about fishing out one of my fine or F-M nibbed pens, just to compare the look. I have an old Shaeffer No Nosense with a gold nib (I've had it since the late 60's I think, but who can really remember much from the late 60's eh?) which writes well. It might make a good match for this paper, with a splashy ink, something like Diamine Asa Blue. Here's what I am thinking:

This paper HAS NOT produced any bleed through and if I can say that then you should be confident that it will be so for you. What does happen with my big fat nibbed pens and dark brooding colors is that there is a tendancy for show-through (I'm new to this so pease excuse me if that is not a FPN approved term), the paper is whisper thin after all. It is not a big problem, especially if you continue using the same nib and color front and back. When he sent my paper order, the inestimable Mr P. Hand included a few sheets that were cut in half. Again, being a full sheet guy I was puzzleld but soon found I liked this format far more than I would have guessed. I have since cut more sheets in half. It just makes sense to me to use a slightly more elgant nib for this purpose... plus those stub nibs really eat up the acreage and a half sheet note does not make much sense if it requires seven sheets front and back.

As you all know (and I am learning) there is more to this than the pen; The pen is the violin, but combined with the proper ink, nib, and paper you have a wonderful ensamble ... or cacaphony if you have not chosen well.

Let me add my voice to the chorus of praise for Penhands efforts. I am certain I would never have bought any of this paper if it were not made so incredibly easy. Thanks for that.

Hmmm, there is a down side: I find myself reaching for that paper now almost every time I have the urge to write. Fortunately the paper is so thin that the pile does not look much different so I can delude myself into thinking I have enough for a long time.

For those who have asked, I've finally gotten in some White Tomoe River paper. It is not a bright white but more ivory and less creamy than the cream. I posted a picture of it in this thread https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php?/topic/232587-tomoe-river-cream-vs-white/

If you want some from 100 pages up to a ream, of either White or Cream, PM me.

I got my (white) paper from penhand this weekend and it is fantastic! I love how thin and smooth it is, and the fact that there’s no bleed-through is great! It even works well with brush pens, for those of you who use those.

I am definitely gunning for one of those design.y journals now. :)

Thanks, penhand!

I tried the paper (from one of penhand's samplers) and it completely lives up to the hype. I have no idea how they do it but even nibs I'm in the process of grinding and that practically cut into other papers feel super-smooth on the Tomoe River. I can't really justify another notebook until I work through some of the ones I have, but it's definitely on the list.

Wow. Just Wow. You should post some of this on the paper exchange (hint, hint!)

A good FPN friend sent me a couple of sheets to try from his stash (thanks). This is quite a beautiful sheet of paper. Typically Japanese - smooth and thin. I'm not a great fan of ivory paper but would be tempted by this if it was about 10gsm heavier. Can't believe there is no bleed or show through considering how light weight the sheet is. Quite remarkable. I agree with the general hype.

Question: is the Tomoe paper acid-free?

According to this page for design.y journals

High quality Paper "Tomoe River"(Ruled, Plain)

Acid free Materials(Papers, Glue, Sewing thread etc.)

I'd say yes.

I am so in love with this paper, it almost hurts :crybaby:

Believe the hype. Gorgeous shading, delicious smooth gliding writing experience, no bleeding or feathering...

& strong! I also use it to write down dream intentions that I put under my pillow. I used to use thick cardstock for this purpose, thinking that thinner paper would tear. The TR gets a little wrinkled but holds up fabulously. I think I have better dreams with it :roflmho:

It's only the price that's painful... worth every penny, but of course it's a lot of pennies :glare:

For those waiting, I just got more cream Tomoe River paper in to go with the white. Everything is now listed in my one classified listing (large sheets, half sheets, pads).

Great fun with those new pens you got for Christmas.

I'm funny when it comes to ordering things in bulk. When I order notebooks, I order at least 10. Ink, gimme two of each. So when I ordered this I thought, hmmm let me take two. Well, a word of warning: 8000 sheets clock in at almost 30 kgs. So if you're worried about shipping charges, you will probably shed a tear or two ;)

I know the paper is thin.

There is mention of 'show-thru' or 'shadow' on the reverse side of the written page.

I'd like to know how adverse the effect is .

I'd like to hear some comments on this aspect of the paper please.

Many thanks :D

It's a shadow. You CAN write on the opposite side of the page. And that's coming from the user of an O3B using saturated inks. Most people with regular nibs will see just an echo of what's on the other side of the page and it won't preclude using the backside.

Busy week, so I don't have time to post pictures, but I'm sure someone else can and will.

It's lovely paper to write on. I have some of the cream (if people want to see what it looks like, the entry I did for the Fountain Pen Day contest is probably still up on their website).

Now I'm thinking that at some point I really need to get some of the white....

Here are two scans of front and back for comparison. You can see some bleed through, but it is not bad enough to keep me from happily writing on both sides of my Tomoe River journal. For letters to friends, sometimes I write on both sides, but often only one as I don't need to save the weight of the paper and I often use a larger selection of inks.
