Email sent to Tomoe River to enquire about the thicker paper Marc mentioned. Hope they respond and send a sample! Will report back here if they respond.

Hi Dan,

It's been over a week since you bravely sent the e-mail to Tomoe River inquiring about their "heavy-weight light" (or should it be "light heavy-weight"?) paper. Still no reply? Do you think we need to ask if there's anyone who could translate the question into Japanese and handle the correspondence for us? Alternatively, is there anyone who could guide us as to what to search for on the Rakuten site to see if it's already there to be ordered? (I think tried to do that using terms from the lightweight paper we've already bought, but without success.)

Marc

When you say "black" to a printer in "big business" the word is almost meaningless, so innumerable are its meanings. To the craftsman, on the other hand, black is simply the black he makes --- the word is crammed with meaning: he knows the stuff as well as he knows his own hand. --- Eric Gill

(as mentioned earlier in this thread)

This is the store that actually sells the paper in Japan. You can run this through google translate for other paper options they carry.

http://www.rakuten.co.jp/auc-shikisai/

I would think they would be the best shot for getting paper for non Japanese speakers since we've already figured that process out.

TWSBI 530/540/580/Mini, Montblanc 146, Pelikan M800, Tomoe River paper, Noodlers inks ... "these are a few of my favorite things"

OK, p.h. I gave it a try. This was non-trivial. I cut and pasted the Japanese characters for the paper we'd already ordered (checking what I'd copied on Google translate) until I got down to just the company name. I wanted to get rid of the "notebook paper," in case the company didn't characterize the heavier paper as notebook paper. Then I asked Rakuten for any products they had from the company. (I'm pretty sure I found the right search field on the page you gave the link to, but if anyone wants to check me, I'd appreciate it.)

Unfortunately, while the search turned up three pages, they are all for the same weight paper as we already have purchased. The three pages are for that paper in A4--4,000 sheets at 8,400 yen; in A3--2,000 sheets at 8,400 yen; and in B4--4,000 sheets at 13,200 yen. (B4, by the way, is essentially 10 inches by 14 inches, so you could get 16,000 5 x 7 inch notebook sheets from that format, if you were so inclined.) But there was nothing of a different weight. So we're stymied unless DanF gets a response that suggests where we might find the heavier weight paper for retail sale. Or can you think of another way to pursue the question?

Thanks to all the advice given in this thread, I have been able to order 4000 sheets through the buying service of tenso. Shipping took long because of Dutch customs. Tenso replied most helpful to a question I had. The paper arrived yesterday, I am thoroughly enjoying using it. Some of it may be cut and glued into A5 notebooks. Thanks for all the useful postings. I've gotten no reply from my inquiry. Perhaps we need to recruit someone who speaks Japanese as Alc suggested.

RHK --- That's one heck of a stack of paper!

My ream of paper landed this morning, and is now stashed in my desk, but minus a few sheets which are winging their way to Canada!

Thank you Alan for your amazing help and patience. I'm going to enjoy using this for a long time indeed.notworthy1.gif

I posted on the Pens form the land of the Rising Sun forum, asking if anyone there can act as translator for us regarding the other paper type. Will report back if I get any replies.

I have friends in Japan (including a business partner) and have plans to go back in the next few years, if not relocate there completely, so I am getting all the more interested in this paper after reading through the thread! I mean, I'd have to sample it (or buy one of the Design Y notebooks) before I ordered 4,000 sheets, but even at the given price, knowing how long 4,000 sheets of really amazing paper would last me would make it a good investment from my perspective.

Meanwhile, I'm drinking one of the cheapest beers locally available. We FP nerds certainly have an odd way of looking at things...

I have a bundle of this paper, and it's impressive. Despite beign much thinner and lighter it performs much like the Rhodia 80 g/m^2 paper in all aspects including (surprisingly for such a thin paper) show throw.

Is there a current or planned group buy of this paper for the UK? Having been sent samples by one of my excellent pen friends, I'd like to buy some for my international correspondence. It really has magical qualities!

Thanks to the generosity of reprieve, I just received some sheets of Tamoe River to play with. It is clearly not all hype and is indeed the smoothest, nicest paper I've written on. I was thinking the toothieness i was seeing with one of my pens was the nib ... no, it was the paper.

A big shout-out to Sam (and everyone else earlier on this thread) for calling my attention to this.

I'm thinking about making the jump but not sure how many decades it will take me to go through 4000 sheets of A4 paper.

If anyone in the U.S. is interested in 1000 sheets, PM me and we'll see what we can work out.

Hello: I might be interested in a some of these sheets if they are still available.

Thank You, coffeetoofull

  • 2 weeks later...

I am loving this paper, and have used it in the original size (A4) and cut in half to A5. My 'problem' is that friends are loving the paper too, and wanting some!

I wonder if everyone who wants to join in on an order put their name here, and there could be enough to get another order organized?

Just a thought - my 1000 sheets cost $50 for shipping from USA to Oz, so I would be crazy to offer to organize this, someone nearer the centre needs to do it.

How about organizing an Australian group buy? It shouldn't be too hard to find 3 other Australians who'd like a bundle of Tomoe River paper. I organized a group buy for the Toronto Posse.

If you're not looking for more of the paper, you shouldn't be any need to do the organizing. Sam Capote and others have already posted detailed buying instructions earlier in the thread, so anyone could do it.
