Laminated Denim Pens

Here they are. Two laminated denim fountain pens. I learned a lot from the first one, and the second one (with the gold nib) turned out MUCH better.

Not perfect by any means, though. And the dark spots are a little damp. I just washed them off before these photos and didn't let them dry completely.

Shawn, what does the threading feel like on these type of pens? Is it much rougher than the usual acrylic?

Thanks!The threads are a little tighter than normal due to the denim material that's in there, but not rough at all.

 

I'm working on other fabrics.

 

I'll be making one from pink suede or velvet pretty soon.

No. Damp as in I washed them off in the sink and they weren't dry yet.

Hmmm... I bet you could. If you ground the rubber up fine enough and mixed it thoroughly enough with some resin of some sort. Don't know if this stuff would work - but I bet West System Epoxy would do it.

And, a Carhartt pen, maybe you could embed that rivet as the tassie?

If you embed one end of the rivet as a tassie, could it be used to snap onto my Carhartt jacket? I guess it might point straight out, and certainly that might look a little unusual, but at least it would be handy.

 

This is a great looking pen, even more unique than the Micarta that is currently in my pocket, and I would be interested in one that could accept something other than a steel Bock nib. Would it be possible to make a section with internal threads that would accept the nib unit from, say, a Bexley, with a barrel that would fit a converter? I'm thinking one of these would be pretty cool with one of my Bexley stubs.

A Bexley nib should be able to fit--any #6 nib would fit but you have to pull the nib and feed and use the feed that Shawn sends. Shawn probably can make threads to twist in a Bexley nib unit. I will be putting a #6 14K kit nib from John Mottishaw--with flex!--in this badboy when it arrives. I will be using the feed and housing Shawn supplies just pulling and swapping the nib. Works amazing on the one I already have from Shawn!!

I am definitely planning on doing more with this stuff. I think my second batch of blanks has turned out pretty good, too, from what I can tell so far. Better than the first I think.

I think a rivet would be no problem. One of my kickstarter pens is going to be a pink fabric pen - with a jewel or stone in the cap finial embedded in epoxy I think.

And like Steve says, the nibs should swap out no problem. The housings are a little different on some of them, but I think some of the newer ones should screw in and out no prob.
