For the last couple of days I have been using a Serwex 362 in red filled with Noodler's Dragons Napalm and a 1362 in green filled with Pelikan Brilliant Green. Excellent pens! I am awaiting a couple of Airmail 58SLs in the post as well as a number of other Serwex Fps. I really have the Indian pen bug at the moment...........my more expensive MBs and Pelikans are feeling unloved

I am using a Noodeler's ebonite aero converted to eyedropper with a #3 Aiki(e?)n Lambert super flexible nib. I wish Noodler's would sell these pens again.

Just inked my 1362 and it is surprisingly well behaved. It is the first EF nib I have used in a long time that I have liked.

Today I have the Serwex MB with flex nib. Running it through the paces.

My Serwex 1362s are more like Western Fines rather than EFs. How do you find the Flex nib on the Serwex MB? I had the flex nib on a Serwex Executive but didn't like it very much.

Maybe I am jaded since using 1.1mm stubs, the 1362 sure seems like an EF to me. Sort of springy too, not that it has tons of variation but you can squeeze some springiness from the nib.

I ordered my Serwex MB with the flex nib from fountainpenrevolution.com. It is like the Noodler's flex nibs in that it is a steel nib with the slit cut almost to the top of the nib. I like it better than my Konrad's flex nib. It is much smoother. You can see a small sample I posted on my Instagram account. The feed keeps up very well too, no railroading yet and I was pushing it hard last night. I was practicing some flex writing for Christmas cards. :)

I just got my Ranga bamboo pens, retro-fitted with Jowo nibs. Now they are perfect - a lovely B nib, a converter (so no blobby ink stains) and of course, a great design.

Been using one of them all day today, with Diamine Majestic Blue. What a lovely pen it is - I went through an entire converter of ink this evening, writing.

True bliss: knowing that the guy next to you is suffering more than you are.

Today it was the Deccan Aurelius, ED version...

I paid for this (and an all-white Masterpiece) about 3 weeks ago, and every time I call Deccan Pen Stores, they keep telling me "it is going out today". According to them it was couriered out last Monday and I still havent gotten it - which makes me doubt that they sent it out.

Plan to call them tomorrow and get to the bottom of this - I am traveling in a few days time for about 2 weeks and wanted to take this with me, but guess that isnt going to happen.

Hmmm. All my purchases have been "across the counter" with them, I have no experience with postal orders from them. They are good folks, I am sure they will deliver eventually :)

Oh, I am not concerned about that - I am sure they will send it out. I dont even mind waiting - just not too thrilled with the inaccurate info they've been feeding me. Anyway, I dont want to derail this thread, so I'll STFU.

A follow-up comment about my earlier post about Guiders - the Guiders I've gotten directly from the company have mostly tended to be dry writers, but a little blade-work on the nibs/feed and a minute's worth of smoothening on brown paper has made them into very good writers, actually. Considering the price, I retract what I wrote about not being too enamored with them.

True bliss: knowing that the guy next to you is suffering more than you are.

I am glad to see these fun pens getting used by folks. I have been using my 1362, I put one of Kevin's Montex 5.5 nibs in it and I even like it more. I have done the same thing with my Serwex 162. I then started using Noodlers Blue Eel ink in them and they really write smooth with that ink.

This is Kevin's photo, the nib on the right is the Montex and it is very extra fine

Do not let old pens lay around in a drawer, get them working and give them to a new fountain pen user.

  • 2 weeks later...

I just recieved a Ranga Large Doufold in green ripple ebonite with a Wality medium nib. I filled it up with R&K Scabiosa and it is writing beautifully, the medium nib, though stiff as a nail, is quite smooth and flows across the page readily and without catching on the paper. A very nice writer, and wonderful ebonite rippling. Additionally, I enjoyed finding an additonal fine nib and feed in the box it came in, so as to have bought two pens for the price of one!

FP Ink Orphanage-Is an ink not working with your pens, not the color you're looking for, is never to see the light of day again?!! If this is you, and the ink is in fine condition otherwise, don't dump it down the sink, or throw it into the trash, send it to me (payment can be negotiated), and I will provide it a nice safe home with love, and a decent meal of paper! I took the plunge earlier today and placed an order for a Ranga green ripple Ebonite pen and I'm really looking forward to my first Ebonite!

@bhavini If I were you I would not buy a dip-pen. They don't replicate the flow characteristics of fountain pens, and they will work well with some inks that will clog fountain pens. Instead of a dip-pen, I would buy a relatively-inexpensive pen that is easy to clean. E.g. a Parker Frontier and a converter for it. Its nib/feed-unit can be unscrewed from the pen, so cleaning it is very very easy.
    • finzi 18 Apr 21:44
@bhavini I ordered a Sailor Hocoro today, to use for testing. I’ll let you know what it’s like. You can get different nib sizes for it, so maybe more versatile than a glass dip pen.

@bhavini, I really like the Sailor Hocoro dip pen. It’s inexpensive, easy to clean, and if you get one with a nib that has a feed, you can get quite a few lines of writing before you have to dip again. I have a fude nib, which I use for swatching and line variation while writing.

What's a relatively cheap tool for a newbie to use to try out new inks, without inking up a pen? I've a bunch of ink samples on their way but I just want to play around with them before I decide on which ones I want to buy more of for writing. I've never used anything except a fountain pen to write with ink before.
    • Penguincollector 15 Apr 17:03

It's gonna end where 1929 left us: a world war, shambles, and 'growth by rebuilding'. That's the conservative view of cycling history --and the big plan. Even if our generations perish.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:49
Of course trade wars are much, more important than the prices of consumer products. The true intention is to weaken the dollar, so that the Chinese start selling their US held debt. But the dollar being the defacto world reserve currency, it doesn't lose value that easily. So the idea is to target trade through artificially raising prices. Problem is, inflation will skyrocket. Good luck with that.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:33

    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:30
In Europe, the only (truly) American produced brand is Esterbrook AFAIK. Tariffs will make Esterbrook products compete on the same level as some high-end European brands (let's say Aurora), while clearly the product is manufactured to compete on a much lower price level.
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:24
So let's say you want to buy a Montblanc or whatever. You pay the current tariff on top of the usual price, unless your local distributor is willing to absorb (some) of the difference
    • lamarax 11 Apr 0:20
Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the exporter.
    • TheQuillDeal 10 Apr 2:44
Can anyone explain how the tariff war will affect fountain pen prices??

@Astronymus I could use cornstarch... Or i could distill it and make it very concentrated.

    • lamarax 17 Feb 18:05
Cappuccino should work. Frothy milk also helps to lubricate the nib. But it has to be made by a barista.
    • Astronymus 17 Feb 16:19
YOu might need to thicken the coffee with something. I admit I have no idea with what. But I'm pretty sure it would work.

    • FineFinerFinest 24 Oct 8:52
No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍
    • Mercian 22 Oct 22:28
@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎
    • FineFinerFinest 21 Oct 4:27

Hello all - New here. My Art studies have spilled me into the ft pen world where I am happily submerged and floating! I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄
