I agree that this is a unique ink and I love to use it on my normal pens.

On a thick and wet nib, though, the dry time is, certainly, not counted in seconds. For those who are intending to use it on a 2B or 3B nib, be aware that it takes quite long for those beads of ink on the paper to fly away; particularly, if you are living in a wetter area.

Here are my experiences on a 90g Ivory Clairefontaine paper paired with a 3B Pelikan nib:

Oh, my stars!!! Why do you all post these wonderful ink reviews. You KNOW I have a thing about ink! Well, I could just by pass the topic and not read it, but that would be rude, wouldn't it. So now, I "need" this ink. I don't have any iron gall inks, so I supposed that justifies another bottle of ink, right?? Of course it does!

Absolutely, USMCMom. This really is a great ink. With great color, excellent water resistance, and a stellar performer on sorry paper, it has become one of my standard office inks.

I came here for the pictures and stayed for the conversation.

Hmmm ... maybe I need TWO bottles! Sounds right ... doesn't it sound right to you??

I have been working my way through a sample of this ink and I must say that I love it! It is a unique colour, plus the ig properties make it distinctive in terms of shading and overall appearance. I will buy a bottle soon. This ink is wonderful for personal use. I'm not sure about business though. I suspect it depends on your corporate culture.

And don't forget the Salix!

Thank you for the fantastic review, and the beautiful handwriting! Definitely I will get a bottle of this!!! :bunny01:

Currently, I am using ESSRI IG ink in my HS 1.3 Stub. I was wondering if anyone of you has used both the ESSRI and the Scabiosa: which of them is wetter in your writing experience? It would be worth it to compare this two IG inks as of wetness and the possibility of drying out nibs...

Thanks for any feedback!

I used them both in the same pen as it happens and I think that the Scabiosa was slightly 'wetter'. However, it was a M Pelikan gold plated steel, in a 200 so not a particularly wide or inherent wet nib.

Thank you for this review. The information you give about the iron gall ink of the past, the origin of the ink... wow  ,pure poetry...and you know your ink business! And your handwriting and clear review are a lust for my eyes.

I received my bottle of Pharmacist' Iron Gall Ink yesterday. It's so magical to witness the color of blue change over to blackish-blue and black over a short period of time. Such fun, this ink. Yes,...did the waterproof test too. Amazing! Irongall ink that is stable, fountain-pen-friendly and smells like days-gone-by-nostalgia. Love, love, love  IG ink and I cannot wait for the color-experiment from Pharmacist.

This IG color is beautiful as is your handwriting.

wow--thanks for a very informative review, carpedavid--very nice

now, if we could get the good cap'n to give us as thorough a review and backstory on the latest meddler's color "hooker's green".....

or is the description pretty much the same as the review, cap'n?

Well I'll tell you something; I don't mind paying for ink but...

...right......

This is one of my favorite inks, and has been for years since being introduced to it by friends here on FPN. I love R&K inks.

Thank you for an excellent review!

  • 2 weeks later...

One thing to note for new users is that the ink will look VERY unsaturated at first, almost like a pale mauve. But over the next 24 hours, it should oxidize quite nicely into the dark purple you see above.

Experience is a hard teacher. She gives the test first, the lesson afterwards.

Like the Alt Bordeaux, this is an ink that got me all excited after reading reviews, but which has disappointed me. I find it dry and uninteresting. I like my colors vivid and don't care about water-resistance that much.

I have two bottles I wouldn't mind trading for something else.

Thanks for a great review and I always love to look at your calligraphy! I'm mildly interested in this ink and would like to run some of it through a couple of my pens to get a sense for how it works personally.

I do have to say, though, that those are some meaty paws you have! :) It's amazing (at least to me) that you do such delicate writing with thick, strong hands.

Aside: One of my other interests is images of skilled hands at work. They are a fascinating study of anatomy and skill and an amazing work of art.

Best!
