If I have misspelled any of the names, please forgive me. I am considering buying three inks from Akkerman. Can you help me pick three?

The reason I'm looking at three is because of the shipping price. If I buy one bottle with shipping it is about $60. If I had other people who were interested in buying, the price drops dramatically. Three bottles will cost about $35 each, if buy them 7 at a time the cost drops to less than $30 a bottle (half price).

Of course, if someone is looking for a money making opp - they should sell this stuff on ebay. eureka.gif

Anyway, what colors if you were me, would you purchase?

Uzer-Gainoten Blzw (an iron gall blue black) is waterproof, and I don't consider it vibrant. Besides the only IG blue black which temps me is Pharmacists's home made Urkundentinte.

Many of the others are vibrant, but I haven't heard of any of them being water resistant. But if going purely for vibrant, Akkerman are dutch, and orange is their national colour (I've heard the family name of their royals Orange), so first up is: Orange Boven.

The ones which most interest me are:

11 Treves-Turquoise

15 Voorhout Violet

16 Oranje Boven

19 Rood Haags Pluche

23 Bekakt Haags

27 Bezuidemwoudgroen

29 Hofvjver Grijs

I own or have tried samples of the following:

Chinatown Red

Denneweg Groen

Garuda Rood

Shocking Blue

Staaten-Generaal Rood

Treves Turquoise

Binnenhof Blues

Groenmarkt Smaragd

Hofkwartier Groen

Oranje Boven

Binnenhof Blues is still mostly legible after a 5 minute soak in water, Shocking Blue is partially legible, and the rest pretty much disappear.

Oranje Boven is far and away my favorite color out of those ten choices (and I generally don't like orange anything). Other vibrant choices are Chinatown Red, Treves Turquoise and Hofkwartier Groen. Unfortunately, none of them show any water resistance.

Scroll through this old thread to see scans of a number of the colors: https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php?/topic/182011-akkerman-inks-from-the-netherlands/page__hl__akkerman

I think some of the names have been explained before on the forum, so forgive me for possibly repeating some info on the names and also for sidetracking the topic here a bit.

Oranje Boven indeed refers to the name of the Royal House (Oranje). Oranje Boven means 'Oranje on top' , it's a phrase people would shout like 'long live the king!', or '.... rules!', so it's fun that you decided to put Oranje Boven on top of the list.

The other names all refer to places in The Hague, residential city of the Oranjes and town where parliament resides.

'Rood Haags Pluche' refers to red velvet seats, the kind upon which kings/queens or ministers would sit and of course there is also an ironical meaning here. Haags Pluche also has a negative connotation, people who once get 'on' it, don't want to get off. So there is also a reference to the corrupting force of power hidden there.

Treves-Turquoise refers to the the Trêveszaal , the hall where cabinet meetings are held. Google it and you'll find pictures!

Voorhout Violet refers to a lane in Den Haag close to the old government buildings. It's lined with beautiful trees, on queens day (april 30th) they are decorated with orange lamps (of course). The violet refers to the colour of the crocusses that bloom in huge numbers under the trees in spring - (hey, that's now, I might go there and post a picture later - google has some beautiful pictures too)

Bekakt Haags refers to the posh accent people in Den Haag are supposed to have. The reasons for calling it 'bekakt' ((bleep)) of that has been discussed on the forum elsewhere.

Bezuidenwoudgroen refers to an area in Den Haag south of the 'Haagse Bos' or the The Hague 'woods', hence 'hout' in the name Bezuidenhout (hout = wood). The inkname most probably turned the H into a W to get closer to the green colour it is. (BTW, the Bezuidenhout was bombed by the allied forces on march 3d 1945 because of V2's the germans had lined up in the Haagse Bos.)

Hofvijver grijs refers to the big rectangular pool next to the old government buildings.

If you put all these colours together on april 30th you would be crying out 'Oranje Boven' and partying until you see Voorhout Violet, be careful not to fall into Hofvijver Grijs, sleep of your hangover on Rood Haags Pluche and wake up looking a bit Treves-Turquoise, then take a refreshing gulp of Bezuidenwoudgroen and tell your friends in Bekakt Haags what you've been up to.

Seriously, I think Akkerman should develop a couloring map of Den Haag to use their inks on. The other names complete the picture.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometime, you may just find you get what you need

Mauritshuis Magenta (a very nice, brilliant pinkisch beetroot color) Love this color!

Oranje Boven, (very, very nice orange color!)

Diep Duinwater Blauw (if you like the old fashion blue-grey color with a tiny (invisible speck of greenisch hint in it)At the moment my most used blue

Hofkwartier Groen is a light, bright green color.

Non of them are waterresistant.... except for the iron gall (number 10)

I would go for the unusual colors, like the above.

As far as water resistant...other than the two IG inks (#10 and I think #30) they are not water resistant in my hands so far (I have 5 of them). The most vibrant in my estimation are #13, 16, 21, 27.

Have fun choosing...I love mine!

Oranje Boven, Chinatown Red, Simplisties Violet, and Hofkwartier Groen are all very vibrant colors. (I highly recommend Oranje Boven and Hofkwartier Groen!) None of them are all that water-resistant--but they are well-behaved, lovely colors that come in fantastic bottles. I ordered several of these inks last year, and they came quickly and were packaged very safely. Paul at Akkerman was wonderful to deal with.

Thank you all! On this instance, I will give up on waterproof. Let's talk vibrant....... Unique and amazing.

#16 will now be absolutely the color.

I was really considering Groenmarkt Smargrd #26 because of the amazing shading.

I had looked through the thread before (thank you), I liked how China Town Red was like Sweet/Sour Sauce which seemed cool, though I didn't see a sample of #12, or #11.

#19 and #17 were both really pretty. Does one shade better or is more unique?

I provided the scan of #26 in the other thread and it somewhat overemphasizes the shading. The sample below is more accurate for my pen. Shading is not an absolute - the degree of shading will vary depending on your pen and paper

Ah, yes, it was your sample that made me think the shading was so incredible. Good to know this is the correct shading.

Amber, I don't want to be an interloper; are you actively looking for people to go in with you on this order?

That's what Q'day is for, isn't it? If not roaming the free/fleamarkets for sumgais.

By the way, my votes were Oranje boven, Nassau blauw (our ruling Monarch is from the House of Oranje-Nassau after all) and Zwarte pad black.

I find orange very satisfying for grading and damn the students feelings *devilish grin*.

I have the two Violets 13 and 15. The first is a real treat; very pure and strong - it really sings on the page and holds its colour well even from the finest of nibs. The 15 is great for giving a little more interest to formal writing - intriguing but not weird. Have tried the 16 orange, but was well over the top for me - far too startling for any use I'd have. Great bottles, of course!
