What Pencil Are You Using Today?

Recommended Posts

I use wooden pencils a lot in my

Classroom.

Tichonderogas, USA gold, black wings, noricas, and others.

Of course we are online right now, but I ask parents to buy tichinderogas or USA golds if they are looking to donate.

I recently purchased an Eversharp Symphony set and an Esterbrook J set so I added a couple of vintage pencils to my small accumulation of mechanical pencils.

Taking notes tonight for a zoom class:

  • Tombow 2558 (B)
  • Musgrave Tennessee Red
  • Rite-in-the-Rain red mechanical

As you can tell from the tips, I didn't use the 2558 much at all tonight - it was more of a backup. The Tenn Red is such a treat to use, and I just kept resharpening it instead of switching pencils like I'd planned.

The R-i-t-R pencil is basically an Autopoint 1.1mm - the red lead is almost pink, but it works great as a periodic highlighter color.

Hi,

Blackwing 602 is a great choice. I frequently use it for music writing, when not using computer to do the job.

Among mechanical pencils, my favorite is a vintage 1960s “tortoiseshell” Pelikan 450, by far.

A colleague got me hooked on Blackwings a while back(in turn I gave her a Safari and some ink samples, and she went deep into fountain pens also). In any case, she initially gave me an original Blackwing, a 602, and a Palomino. After trying them all, I settled on the 602 as my favorite, and bought a few boxes of them. I do give them away frequently also, although the ones I've sharpened stay close by me.

Fortunately, since a box of good pencils typically is in the same price range as a lot of 60mL/2oz bottles of FP ink, trying them out isn't exactly a high stakes affair. At my former workplace were a few of us were interested in better writing instruments, we'd gift around different pencils when one of us tried something new(and often give them all away if we didn't take to them).

Still, though, if I need a good predictable and comfortable pencil, I grab a 602. There are usually a few sharpened ones on my deks.

I now have 14 plus boxes of 14 varieties of Blackwing pencils. Removed a ferrel and put a Palomino

Blackwing in a pencil extender. I use them everyday. A few from the boneyard:20201012_212146.jpg

Have you tried Staedtler norica?embarrassed_smile.gif

I like them.

Those are very and affordable pencils. You can always find them in big office supply stores. I think 2014? were the best run.

If you like the norica, give the noris a try.

I stopped buying Blackwing after the California edition. It was mainly due to their price increase, over the years. They are nice pencils tho. But it was silly of me to keep purchasing them, since I am sitting on Dozens of Blaisdel Calculators and Vintage Blackwings.

I find the Tombow mono 100 and Hi uni to be superior pencils. Theres also the vintage Eagle Turquoise 2b/3b with the Chem Sealed logo, that can be had for $15 bucks shipped on the Bay from time to time. If anyone is looking for good, not to expensive pencils, that I believe are better than Blackwings, send me a PM. I tell you which pencils to to try,
