While I really enjoy my Nataraj pencils, I've been on the lookout for some nice USA made ones. Today I received a dozen Musgrave 909 Ceres #2 yellow pencils. My first impression is good, but I'll use a couple before I commit to buying some from their other lines.

They're made in Shelbyville, Tenn.

A picture of a pencil is worth at least 1,000 words....

Returned from JPN last month, chanced upon this special edition of the classic KERRY mechanical pencil .

I have the old original version, from way back in the late 70's and so I indulged in this the moment I saw it.

(from Tokyu Hands inside DAIMARU annexed to TOKYO train station.)

fpn_1560136383__20190610_103243.jpg

Near the end of the cap, says proudly 1971 ...

Its knurled part of the barrel is black , and a very nice black I must say ...

No longer does it have the checkered grid knurl which I think is a more unique rendition. :(

This diamond patterned knurl, is kinda common ... :(

fpn_1560136461__20190610_103307.jpg

Cap opened ...

the alum section or nib part is nice and matte finish

fpn_1560136651__20190610_103327.jpg

The back of the cap end also is printed ...

fpn_1560136740__20190610_103347.jpg

The cap snaps close with a firm and sure 'click' as does the original.

But I do notice some difference , the innards ...

Its more costly than the ordinary version ...

Its 2500Yen - not cheap.

The ordinary version ( in assorted colours on the store display next to it) is only 1500Yen.

... will do a side by side comparison with the old one soon ...

Strange, can't find any info on this black version on the internet.

You guys can find ?

Until recently I have use sporadically mechanical pencils, usually in 0.5 HB. With my daughter being at school and she must use a pencil I gift her some of my pencils, drawing my attention to a darker lead refill. After reading here and there some reviews, I purchase Pilot G Neox High-Purity Graphite lead 0.5 2B, and that is way better than I remember pencil back at school. The lead is dark, smooth and can be used for sketches and normal writing. I have used the leads in a Pentel EnerGize Automatic Pencil 0.5, but I didn't like the plasticky and rubbery feels of the Pentel. Than a Pentel sales man gift me a Pentel GraphGear 500, the pen is nice, but too skinny for me.

So, my latest acquisition is Mitsubishi Uni Mechanical Pencil Pure Malt M51015.22 0.5, which has a thicker barrel, made from recycled Whiskey Oak barrels, a decent weight and is an eye catcher! The only negative issue is the top rattles a lot...but I will get used with that... :)

I have pretty much standardized on the rOtring Rapid Pro .7 due to it's weight and retractable tip. I find it to be comfortable, practical and reliable. Overall, a very nice writing tool.

Fool me once, shame on you.

Fool me twice; damn

There goes that fox again.

TOMBOW is a great pencil company. Its "hey-day" was in the past, IMHO. They were daring and pioneered some really strange, outrageous, terrific mechanical pencils and pens. Today their offerings are mostly a bit mediocre, albeit with some nice values. It would be great if they'd get more creatively daring again, but then the manual writing realm is so very different than it was 20 years ago.

A pencil I used today is an all steel twist-erase type by TOMBOW. While not quite as generously wide as a Pentel Twist Erase pencil, it has an eraser that is wider than a vast majority of your typical "emergency" erasers found under the end caps of most mechanical pencils today. Unfortunately the proprietary eraser refill was discontinued, but... an existing TOMBOW MONO eraser refill will work after trimming down the diameter just a bit (a light grit sandpaper works well).

I am surprised that the Pilot S20 does not come up often if at all

In the under $20 category, this pencil should make it to the top 5 list, if not the top 2 list. ;)
