What Pencil Are You Using Today?

Mitsubish 9850 - an office pencil, which is just as well, as I'm in the office today!

It's HB, sharpens to a long point, and is a smooth writer.

Not as swish as the Tombow Monos, Hi-Unis or Blackwings, but for their price (around £5 for a dozen including postage) they do provide a much higher bang to buck ration.

I used that one today, too. The other one was a Mitsubishi 9800EW, the unlaquered eco version with the green imprint.

Nabbed a burgundy demi 51 aero pencil, so after a once over, wipe down, & refill, I've been using that for some writing.

A Staedtler Mars 754 Soft, a vintage pencil with a carcinogenic lead with aniline dye. Also, a Staedtler 925 25-03.

Midori brass pencil, like most days, with the Midori HB wooden pencil part of it replaced with a sawn-off Koh-i-Noor 2B.

Lined paper makes a prison of the page.

Got a Koh-I-Noor Versatle 5228 2mm lead holder. I bought it because it is the only "stubby" lead holder I could find that had a drop clutch rather than an incremental advance mechanism.

So far, I like it. It's a little slippery to hold, but not enough that it causes hand fatigue during use. Even so, I like knurling and wish it had a knurled grip.

I have one of those too (for the same reason). I don't like it all that much. I think it's the weight that bothers me. I bought some pentel highlighter lead for it and just keep it around in case I ever need it. I doubt I will ever use it as a regular pencil.

Niji Grip 350. Looks good, feels good in the hand, seems well made.

I had never heard of the brand before I happened to notice it in a stationary shop. Judging from its construction, I suspect it was manufactured by Mitsubishi.

Graf von Faber-Castell Perfect Pencil (with the GvFC Round Eraser) in Sterling Silver.

Many pencils write well.

But it's not just about writing well... it's about making a fashion statement.

I'm super tempted to cut down my Sanford turquoise 2mm lead holder to the same length as the 5228. Then I'd have a stubby with great knurling.

My Staedtler 925 85-07; an amazing discontinued pencil that I picked up for only $20 at Goodwill!

  • 3 weeks later...

Too hot to use an FP today. The ink is smearing as I write due to the heat, and my left handedness. Not normally a problem in England.

So, this afternoon, I'll be redrating with a clutch of Blacking 602s.
