I've been marking scripts for the last two weeks, and used a variety of pencils to make the job more interesting.#

Today, I've think I've found the Tombow Mono100 2B to be just about the best pencil ever.

It gies a nice dark line and doesn' t need quite so much sharpening.

Yes, the Faber Castell 4B(!) has great point retention, as does the Blackwing 602, but the Tombow gives a much more attractive line - even though it does need sharpening a bit more often.

To pencil fans in the UK - try the WH Smith own brand pencils - they cost 69p each - and are scarily good. The 2B and B don't keep their point as well as hte Japanese ones, but they are creamy - I suspect its a Derwent core in them - but they are not too shabby for the price.

Hooked up with a Pentel Excalibur mp/rb set for what I consider a steal. Shame, although not unexpected, that the rb refill is out of production & a whole section + resevoir refill like the Sharpie pens rather than a something I could mess around with to find a third party replacement. Could pick some up off of an office supply, but I'm not sure it's worth the gamble of getting some not dried out. Bought the set for the pencil anyway, which is just great. Like a better done Jotter pencil in 0.7. Been playing around with it since it got here a few hours ago.

Eberhard Faber Mongol "Fine Writng" 293 No 2 ..... whew!

As I said in an earlier posting to this topic I've always written with a Staedtler Noris pencil. That is until now. I've just taken delivery of some Tombow Mono 100 pencils and I'm smitten. The HB is much darker than I'm used to and the 2B is in another league as far as I'm concerned.

It matters not with what you write,

just write.

I'm using two new arrivals: Pentel Graph 1000 and Rotring 600, both in 0.5mm.

The PG1000 is excellent. Despite it being completely different shape, materials etc it still somehow feels like an upgraded P205, a pen I'm sure is one of the best pencils in the world, ever, regardless of price. I much prefer it to the Graph Gear 1000, which is too much of a specialist drafting pencil (I hate writing with it).

I've finally bought a Rotring 600 to see what the hype is all about. And you know what? The hype is probably true. I'll have to use it much more to get a better understanding of it, but for something so solid it's feels a compact pen and the knurling isn't uncomfortable. Nice.

I've been enjoying the Alvin Draft/Matic in 0.9mm. I've had the Draft/Matic in 0.3mm for years, but just got the 0.9 version earlier this week.

The Aspara Absolute Extra Strong/ Extra Dark is surprisingly good, and it really is a great deal at the low price it sells for.

It's a fantastic pencil, IMHO of course, plus you get a sharpener and an eraser in each box. A really great deal.

Viking Element 1 added to my pocket, partnered with my long carried CdA Swiss Wood. Both held in my pocket with a faultless pencil clip, best pencil clips ever!

OK, you convinced me. I just ordered two boxes in time for NaNoWriMo in November. The idea is to use the Steinbeck method - sharpen the pencils to start with and then replace each one as they turn blunt, until I've got the number of pages. Then resharpen the bunch before the next writing session.

With this sharpening method, you are going to be waiting awhile to finish each box, as the point retention on these pencils is really decent. Aspara makes really great pencils, but also some of the best (and only!) wooden pencil TV commercials I have seen!

I got two boxes - 20 pencils for less than £5 of the Platinum Extra Dark pencils. I sharpened the first box - and they are very good pencils. They'll certainly do the job over November. The included sharpener does produce a sharp point too.
