What Pencil Are You Using Today?

Mistubishi Alpha-Gel Kurutoga, of course. What else would a civilized person use?

Seriously, as a dual major in math and Japanese, I do a ton of writing with pencil, both in quantity and in hours of the day. I probably use a pencil at least 2-3 hours, every single day. I need a pencil that will last a long time, is comfortable to write with and doesn't require sharpening or rotating while I write. Only the Alpha-gel Kurutoga does all of that.

Staedtler Mars Technico 780C Leadholder

I've got a dozen (or more) lead holders and the 780C is always the one I come back to. I guess that makes it my favorite.

And to make this post topical, today I'm using a Palomino Blackwing 602.

Caran d'Ache Office 2.0mm with B lead (has a metal body not plastic). Will be working outside with -9c temps and need to take notes. Only instrument that does not let me down in the cold, it leaves the marks on paper with no hard starts or skipping. Can not wait until -19c later this week burr..

Today it is a Pilot s10 0.5 with Pilot Neox B leads. I really like the balance of the s10's

Have you seen the new black version of the 780C?!

It's love at first virtual sight!

I haven't seen it in a store, but hopefully it'll be the same plastic as the regular version...

I like that they've added a lead grade indicator to the clip. If it's the same clip that mine has, there is no way it'll accidentally get changed.

I am using (and using it hard) one of my Pelikan Auch pencils, 1.18 leads, writes and works like a charm. Not as fancy as modern ones, less features, but it does its job.

Excellent balance and it sits in my (small) hand very comfortable. Good writer, as far as I am concerned.

Conte a Paris Graphite (graphic pencil) 2B. Bought a couple yesterday and I'm surprised at how comfortable they are to use.

Mitsubishi pencil U7-203. Got a bunch of them and the 0.5 variant decades ago and while their exteriors are obviously worn and scratched and most of the end caps are gone, most still work. Silly Mitsubishi, never heard of planned obsolescence?

(at least they still get to sell me leads for them!)

Today I'm using a generic woodcased pencil that I found at a thrift store, in one big Zip Lock bag of 25 pencils for $3.00. Lots of defunct brands and also a #3, a #4, and a few #2 2/4.

This is that generic advertising pencil, from Wheat Growers Mutual Hail Insurance Company, Effingham, KS. Although it writes quite nicely, I like it mainly because of the easy to remember phone number.

I think I have one of those that belonged to my father. Not in as good a condition as yours, though.

Today it was the Tul mechanical pencil in 0.5mm.

It's not anything special, but it's a solid pencil that happened to be laying on my desk when I needed a pencil.

My favorite pencils use 0.3 mm leads; however, recently I have been trying a Studio 0.5 which is a cheap Pentel P205 clone, but with a slimmer grip.

I had a bought a package of ten Bic 0.5 pencils whose leads were very smooth and dark for HB. I replaced the Studio's leads with ones from the Bics and liked the result. Also the Bic leads are approx 10cm each so last longer too.
