What Pencil Are You Using Today?

Pentel Sharp 209.

It's probably my least favorite drafting pencil, but I wanted a 0.9mm pencil to do some puzzles and was too lazy to get my bag out of the van (it's hot out there!).

I found an old Mirado Black Warrior. So old that the eraser was petrified. I used my knife to give it a chisel point and have been playing with it for the last couple of days.

It has glossy black paint on it rather than the dull matte finish that Black Warriors seem to have today, but the lead feels pretty close.

Staedtler Norica HB. It's pretty soft, like a B.

It's not bad, but I prefer their Rally, even though the eraser is junk. But hey, it's the graphite that counts, right?

If this is you, and the ink is in fine condition otherwise, don't dump it down the sink, or throw it into the trash, send it to me (payment can be negotiated), and I will provide it a nice safe home with love, and a decent meal of paper! A Staedtler Rally that I found on the ground some time ago. It's a fine pencil, but I don't think there's any place local that sells them around here now that Staples is gone.

I don't normally purchase pencils with erasers for myself, so it's unlikely that I'll attempt to replace it once it's used up.

I use two pencils every single day: Graf von Faber-Castell classic for technical drawing; and Montblanc Mozart for casual note taking. Both are 0.5mm

The last few days I have been on a Zebra kick and have been using:

  • Tect two-way 0.3mm light.
  • Tect two-way 0.3mm.
  • DelGuard 0.5mm.

My favorites are the 0.3mm ones and the metal body (standard) Tect is top dog right now.

Waterman pencil from 1928, part of an 0552 set. It appears to use the same 1.1 mm lead as my gold Wahl-Eversharp from the same year, which is handy for supplies if not for varied lines.
