Staedtler Tradition HB and Faber-Castell Perfect Pencil with a 9000 B pencil...

post-26352-0-84993900-1424193181_thumb.jpg

I'm deeply disappointed by the Faber Castell 9000 B grade, which is much harder than any other B grade pencil around and quite scratchy. I bought it for the built in sharpener and the pencil cap and you could expect a bit of difference in quality being a pencil thought as a refill, but I've used other grades of the 9000 line and it's the same quality standard.

On the other hand, the Staedtler tradition was quite a surprise, it delivers a homogenous amount of lead in the paper and does not scratch the paper at all... much more soft lead than the B 9000 and quite durable point. I was also fond by the look of the pencil, the hexagonal shape accentuated by the black and red stripes is amazing.

Staedtler Tradition HB and Faber-Castell Perfect Pencil with a 9000 B pencil...

Never thought Faber Castell pencils will disappoint to this extent.

When I saw the Staedtler pencil, I realized all the while, in school, we had been using a copy of that :lticaptd: (Realized it today)

Wondering, what is the softest lead hardness available in a pencil form? We have upto 8B here. (I saw 9B in your post)

There are 2 different types of Faber 9000 pencil. First, those made in Germany and second, those made in the Far East. The former have very little difference between grades and the line appearance is generally faded. Also, Faber 9000's grading system is at least 2 grades lower than other manufacturers; so to match a Staedtler HB, with a 9000 you need a 2B. My favourite is Faber's 4B. Do try the German made pencils. Edited by setriode

Best,

Sonik

The 'lacquered' finish at the bottom suits the pencil better in the Nataraj 621!

I've seen till 10B grades on the Hi- Uni Mitsubishi, which I've read is the best of the best. But as setriode just pointed out, the grade between brands are quite different.

I've tried the German made pencils before and the refill for the Perfect Pencil states that it is made in Germany as well. Indeed I've only try till the 2B grade, but it was also scratchy...

... maybe on the softest grade of the line is a different story.

Bought a Faber Castell Loom today. (sale for 12 EUR)

And ordered a TWSBI pencil (0.7 retractible) and a Troika Construction Graphite as an addition to the flock.
