What Pencil Are You Using Today?

I've just taken delivery of a Pentel Kerry 0.5. It looks good, feels good and I'm eager to get using it.

It matters not with what you write,

just write.

I've started writing with the new Kerry, with an AinStein B lead. It's a delight to use. The only problem I have is loading the lead with my unsteady hands, so easy to break.

It matters not with what you write,

just write.

I scored a 0.7mm Lamy Scribbler today at Mayr&Fessler in Vienna.  Tried to buy their demo pen too, but they weren’t comfortable selling it.  I’ve always wanted one of these in wood but the Scribbler’s been out of production for a while.  They sold it at a discount since it was their last one.  I checked eBay when we got home and used ones were going for more than €200!  I almost feel guilty now.               …almost.IMG_5369.thumb.jpeg.4795cdd87bc4e6aedd8fe91f3da6de3d.jpeg

Lamy even had the Mayr und Fessler name and address on the inside of the box.  Shiny black varnish over matte black cardboard.

It’s a comfy little pen to write with.

It is a beauty and you are very fortunate to have found it.

Agreed and things got even better.  Two days later we wandered into a tiny stationary store because my wife wanted to look at paper.  They had the matching ballpoint for 34euros!  I returned home with a matching set of Scribblers.  Really comfy tools.

Wonderful serendipity. The ballpoint is fetching a lot more money these days because they're rather uncommon, more so than the 0.7 mm or 3.14 mm pencils.

IMG_4969.thumb.jpeg.1fbaa598bdd8bd3c93c7d1e3dcb5dcd1.jpegThe 9852 B (bottom) is certainly the best of these three, by far, and is as good as any pencil out there. Excellent lead, top quality timber, with perfect lacquering. It's my favourite woodcase pencil.

The 9852EW HB (middle) is a recycled pencil and the wood isn't nearly as nice to sharpen the regular model. It's also unpainted and nor is it glossed, so doesn't feel as nice to hold. It's not at all bad, though, and the method of attaching the pieces of scrap wood together with joints is quite unique. Once you've used one for a while, the oils from your hands make it more pleasant to hold.

The 9850 HB (top) uses an inferior odourless wood, which is disappointing as it's the same price as the 9852 pencils in the UK. The lead is nice at least, and the glossy lacquering is also top notch. All the erasers are quite good, but the regular 9852 perhaps edges it there too.

Pelikan 450 in green stripes, from 1954.
It takes 0.9mm calibre leads.

It is really well-made, and really well-balanced.
Even though it doesn’t contain an eraser, it’s delightful

Looks like it provided Muji inspiration for their pencil-

Holy Cow!  That is a pretty close knock-off.

LAMY scribble Pencil

...still happy with my Scribbler, though.
