Blood-Red Inks?

Diamine 'Red Dragon' is perfect! Seriously get a tissue and drop some of the ink on to it and you will see it's very realistic.

As for writing, it is quite sophisticated in that it is not really one of those 'teacher reds'. Rather it is an ink which can be used for normal writing. I use it all the time :)

Ignore the blue? I can't my retina has been seared. lticaptd.gif

Ignore the blues in this image, the red is Noodler's Antietam.

I really like Levenger Cardinal Red.

I'd actually say that Scribal Work Shop Zhulong Red is close to blood. The scan on Goulett's shows it more pink but when I use it, it dries on my end it's a dark red.

Anyone have a comparison of Diamine Red Dragon or Syrah vs. Oxblood? I'm looking for something a little less...dried...for use in my Lamy Vista, and the Oxblood's a bit too dark in the pen and not nearly fresh enough on the paper. (yes, I always was a fan of those syringe pens...) It's incredibly realistic on a tissue, though! Or is there something better (Diamine is much easier and cheaper for me to acquire than Noodler's, or I'd go for the Antietam) than either of those for that "just split a vein and wrote with it and it's still wet" look?

I've never tried Red Dragon, but I wouldn't say Oxblood and Syrah are all that comparable. Syrah really does look like its name. A nice dark wine-colored ink where Oxblood is a dark bloody red. Syrah doesn't look like fresh blood but its one of my favorite inks, so I definitely recommend it! Off the top of my head I would say give Private Reserve's Fiesta Red a try.

I was really surprised by this one because I tried it first by dipping and it was very pink. Then I tried filling the pen and got a very vivid red. I guess it depends!

This is a creepy but weirdly appropriate (with Halloween) thread. :roflmho: I think Noodler's Tiananmen looks like blood which really weirded me out with the name. I like the ink but I keep thinking of those poor people. It was too creepy for me to keep using. If I could get past the name maybe...

Diamine Syrah leans toward purplish, and Ox Blood doesn't. There is really no mistaking them for one another, but I really like both of them.

If you have any experience pulling feeds you could use an acrylic ink (in theory acrylic can physically block the feed if it dries on the feed too many times, which hasn't been a problem for me). I've been using Magic Color Solar Scarlet in a cherry red Bexley for almost a year now. I title my journal entries with it.

Acrylic will give a more solid red than any non-pigmented ink. You just have to be aware that this stuff will not flush out if it needs cleaning.

Arterial Blood: MB Alfred Hitchcock

I just received a bottle of MB:AH, but have yet to open it. OTOH, I did discover something quite interesting.

I have high blood pressure and if I don't take my meds regularly, I may suffer from a nose bleed. This happens every great once in awhile. It happened about a week ago so I was able to see some fresh arterial blood on the tissue I used to stop the bleeding. I didn't have an ink smear handy to compare color with real blood, but I had something else immediately at hand that matched my fresh blood perfectly: Netflix red shipping envelopes! No kidding. My blood and that envelope were a perfect match. So, you wanna compare your fave ink with some fresh blood and you subscribe to Netflix, there ya' go. Beats the heck out of puncturing yourself. ;)

I have a bottle of Matador (didn't know it was such an uncommon ink!) and I'd be happy to provide a writing sample/some pictures tomorrow for those still interested.

As an aside, my Preppy looks like a vial of blood loaded with Matador.

Noodler's Black Swan in ENGLISH Roses (caps to emphasize not Australian roses) is the color of dried blood on the page.

thank you, nice ink the matador...

I agree! It was my first red; still love it! It's my go-to ink for grading.

And are your students terrified they'll be used as the source of your ink, with that?

It's wonderfully bloody. I'm definitely going to have to try it - I'm finding the Antietam to be a bit too orangey and light, after the Oxblood was too dark.

Students should always have a certain degree of fear in them, no? :roflmho: :roflmho: :roflmho:

I definitely recommend the Matador. I bought it precisely because it looked so very bloody. I was not disappointed.
