List Of Possible Nib Substitutions

Montblanc 144 nibs: I have seen these going for $100 and up on ebay. My understanding is MB doesn't sell parts. I have a couple of spare 144 nibs, but I am not selling, as they are too much fun to try in other pens.

Pelikan M200 and M400 nibs screw into Esterbrook J, but the steel ring around the collar protrudes. The M400 OM nib I screwed into a blue J writes pretty and the protruding nib doesn't seem awkward.

My TWSBI 530 fine nib is better than any of the Pelikan fine nibs I have had.

M600 B nib that someone worked into a CI on the top of the nib works fine in my gray M200. Cap screws down perfectly. Production variation on the nib?

Waterman Ideal #2 14K fine nib works perfectly in a Reform 1745 in place of the Reform steel nib. This is one of the best I have done.

I just discovered this thread. With some editing it should be pinned as a reference. It has very useful information which will appeal to many.

Thank you Ms Cotterets for posting it.

Re editing the post I suggest a table which lists alphabetically the pens and the confirmed nib substitutions. Can this forum display information in a readable table?

Come on administrators, this is an informative and cool thread - it should be pinned.

I just wanted to add FC nib unit (Mine is Medium nib from FC BASIC) as substitution option for #5 TWSBI and possibly will work with Franklin Christophs with #5 nibs too.

I recently purchased a Monteverde Artista Crystal. I wanted a diiferent nib in it and to still use the clear feed. I got a #5 Edison 1.4 mm nib and the original feed works well with the nib and keeps up with the ink demand.

I have a very beautiful Kaigelu 336 on it's way. It has a medium nib on it but I am very partial to a fine/extra fine nib. Does anyone know of a suitable swap for this nib?

I know pelikan M400/M625 nibs would fit a twsbi 530/540 perfectly, but could any one confirm that a M600 would work on a twsbi 580?

I've tried to find it out but it seems everyone lost interest before the 580 hit the market.

Glad I stumbled upon this informative thread! I learned elsewhere that the wonderful Franklin-Christoph music nib would fit on the Jinhao 450, and indeed it does -- perfectly. However, I don't like the Jinhao's body because it's too heavy and the cap doesn't post well. Next I tried putting the music nib on the Nemosine Limited (a body that is just the right weight and size for me), and it seemed to fit well at first glance. However, now it alternates between leaking profusely and going dry, so I suspect it doesn't fit as well against the feed as it seems. I know the F-C nib is supposed to fit on Noodler's Ahab, but I've used an Ahab, and it's a bit chunky for me, too.

Any other pen bodies that the F-C music nib is compatible with? Obviously, I'm looking for something relatively inexpensive -- otherwise, I'd just spring for a F-C pen body and be done with it. (But what's the fun in Frankenpenning if you just put a nib on a body by the same manufacturer? )

Or any suggestions on the problem I'm having with the Nemosine/F-C combo? It would be a perfect pen body -- if only the ink flowed well.

Thanks to those who have been compiling this info over the years. It's still useful!

I'm interested in what would work with the Diamond 580 (and Vac 700, too). I've heard that the 580 is not quite as nib-swap friendly as the 540 and 530 were. Not that I don't like the stock nibs - they're very nice - but a little voice keeps asking, "what would this pen be like with a Franklin-Cristoph Masayama Cursive Italic nib?" Has anyone tried this?

Platinum Century 3776 Bourgogne (Diamine Syrah), Nakaya Portable Writer Midori with 14k Extra Extra Fine nib (Lamy Peridot), Pilot Vanishing Point Stealth Black with Extra Fine nib unit (Pilot Blue Black), a dozen Nockco DotDash index cards of various sizes and a Traveler's Notebook.

Please post results here if you confirm or try this yourself. I've heard that the F-C music nib is compatible with the TWSBI Vac 700, and I'm thinking about getting a Vac 700 to try it, but I'd feel better about it if someone would confirm that they are compatible -- not just the fit, but also that the pen flows well with the "foreign" nib attached. Sometimes nibs seem to be compatible in that they fit, but the feed must not be fitting well, because the flow is irregular.

Pelikan M200/M400/etc nib units will friction fit into the front section of a Kaweco Sport, but it requires a slight modification of the section and some sealant. Eyedropper only.

If one could source a P200 nib unit, then one could retain the Kaweco Sport as a C/C.

So I have tried Franklin Christoph #5 masuyama CI and nib unit of faber castell BASIC on my 580, both fits well. Franklin Christoph nib looks little smaller for body otherwise works fine. I have posted pic of my 580 with Faber Castell medium nib earlier in this thread.

#6 jowo nib will fit #6 Bock feed. Needed a nice smooth broad nib in my Conid Streamline.

Wondering is a #6 jowo will fit a Platinum 3776 ? I've got a body and cap looking for a nib.

I have tried Waterman and Sheaffer #2 and #3 nibs in the Kaigelu. I have also used a Montblanc 144 nib in the Kaigelu. They worked. You can find Waterman nibs that can be flexed if that has value to you.

Great thread and thank you to the original OP for the list.

Thank you.

Bump Up or Pin it (to win it) :D

Don't count on it. I've asked the administrators to pin this thread... 3 years ago.
