Recommended Posts

I have a Lamy Dialog 3 on its way in the post, but ive been wondering apart from the dialog and Pilot VP, what other good retarctable nib fountain pens are there?

EDIT: No clue why this topic is coming up twice... Only pressed post once...

You should check out the stipula Da Vinci, it has a retracting nib. Saw one today at the baltimore pen show, had to really restrain myself from buying it. If you want really rare, there is something called the Duocolor which has twin retracting nibs.

I have a VP and love it, would love to get another retractable, namely the da vinci.

Interesting... Ill definitely check it out!

I ask mostly because they are usually unique, and I imagine that they are difficult to make, so you will only find quality ones, no cheap knockoff retractable pens.

Probably the only Italian pen I'd ever buy, if it would be available brand-new (& I could afford it), might be this "Aurora Nobile LE", as found on "nibs.com" (no affiliation). I don't know that it would be classed as a true retractable, or actually how useful it would be,............... but it's sure is pretty.

:notworthy1: TWSBI's making a retractable!? Nice. :D

Camlin's another "retractable" fountain pen. I think hisnibs.com sells 'em. Not a clicky retractable though. Twisty type.

A curious pen, having both a cap and being retractable! Again, very expensive!

Pilot doesn't Just have the Vanishing Point. They have the Decimo, and the Fermo, all three are considered part of the Capless family.

I had no idea! Thanks for the info!

Edit: Well i just won a Pilot VP used in black on ebay for under 50 dollars shipped! Appears to be in excellent condition, very excited :) hows the medium nib on these pens? I relise its finer than european nibs, but just curious about what anyone may think

I'm glad I could have been of some sort of assistance. I am actually the proud owner of a Pilot Fermo, and while I don't like the "cheapness" of a click mechanism, the Fermo is A++ on my list. I only say cheapness, because I just associate it with clicky bic pens; it has no bearing on how solid the VP's actually are, which are pretty solid.

Pilot's Medium VP nib isn't too narrow, you won't mistake it for a fine. It's a ball tipped nib, so no line variation to speak of, the 18k nib coul be characterized as 'soft' but the tines don't spread so not 'flexy'. They're nice everyday writers, very smooth. I've tried a few different inks in mine, had the best experience with the Pilot ink in cartridges so far.

Cheers, Ted

An everyday writer is all I need! I think its going to be a great "pull out and write a quick note" sort of pen that can be operated with one hand. Do they typically come with converters? Ill try a few different inks in it, namely Noodlers Heart of Darkness and Diamine Steel Blue. Ill see what works best!

They usually come set up for cartridges, they have a SS sleeve that slips over the cartridge, not sure if it's to keep the length of the clicker mechanism happy or what. You can also fit the CON-20 or CON-50, they don't hold much ink though so I usually reuse an old cartridge and refill with a syringe.

Thanks for the info. Never heard of a pen having a sleeve to put over the cartridge... Weird.

I'm guessing it's (the sleeve) there so that when you press the button to click the pen open or closed, it's not pressing on the cartridge

Here are a few more retractables for your list:

In addition to the Da Vinci, Stipula makes the Mona Lisa and the La 91 Chic.

And for a very inexpensive retractable you may want to consider the Hero 236 or Stypen UP.

It's to keep the cart happy that is more like it. I think they had issues with the carts being crushed by the mechanical forces on it. They don't look brittle, and I've cut a couple apart, and they certainly can take the beating, but I think that is the case from what someone else told me.

Thanks for clarifying :)

Now I'm a little confused as to what model the pen I bought is... Can anyone tell from this picture?
