Sugar Cane Paper

I know that sugar cane paper has been discussed in relation to to Staples supposedly carrying it, but I sure can't find it! The Memphis area finally had a Staples open and I drove there yesterday, but they not only didn't carry it, but had never heard of it. If anyone has purchased any brand sugar cane paper from Staples, do you by any chance have a stock number?? You'd not think this was so hard to find, but seems to be difficult just finding stores that know what it is.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

We're apparently the only ones who know it as bagasse or sugar cane paper. And part of the problem is that they keep changing the name they use for the stuff.

Here is a link to the large wire-bound notebook. By the way, that online price is crazy high. These things have been going for $3.00 to $4.00, lower during the back-to-school specials.

I came here for the pictures and stayed for the conversation.

Staples calls it "Sustainable Earth" paper. It will tell you on the package or notebook somewhere if it's sugar cane or bagasse.

Also, sometimes you can order online and pick stuff up at Staples to save on shipping.

Notepads are here:

Also what bagasse products they have in stock can vary during the year. Close to school start is best time.

I'm just finishing up a large stack of notepads. The paper is not always consistent in quality.

I did a review of it here, with a picture of the notebook. Look for the earthy cardboard brown covers. They even have a composition notebook with this sugarcane paper.

I bought a package of 8 writing pads yesterday evening at our Staples. These are wide-ruled, perforated, 50 sheets per pad. They were labeled as follows:

Sustainable Earth

Sugarcane-Based Writing Pads

Paper from 80% sugarcane waste.

The bar code is: 7 18103 09928 8.

I paid $4.90 for the 8-pack, which works out to $0.0123 / sheet. Great value!

My local Staples carries some, branded "Sustainable Earth". It's a hard, thin paper but both sides can be reasonably used. I've not seen bleed through (yet). It is fountain pen friendly but I wouldn't care to use it to send a proper note. It feels "crunchy", if that makes any sense. At last browse (two to three weeks ago), most of the offerings at Staples were variously sized journals and middle school-quality notebooks.

To my chagrin, the same Staples ceased to carry Ampad Gold Fiber notebooks, which I rather like, save for the fat, green lines. A couple nibs in the stable get on well with Ampad Gold Fiber notebooks, and not as well on harder papers.

Also noticed by the way of things: I haven't seen a steno pad stocked on the shelves since - who knows? I like the size and used steno pads exclusively in grad school. I suspect we may have a shortage of professional stenographers in the states. Staples will stock what sells. That thesis does not adequately explain why my local Staples also has three un-purchased bottles of black Quink.

I went to Staples last night and could not find "bagasse" I asked for it at the counter and got a mildly horrified look (what did you call me?). Well, sustainable Earth is what it is called now. It's just fine but I find that I like their regular pads better. Compared to Sam's pads, they are Crane Stationary. Alas, I have a zillion Sam's pads and they are cheap.

What goes on in Staples defies logic in my neighborhood store. roflmho.gif

I use Sustainable Earth Composition books for my journals, now covered in a rustic leather cover by Renaissance Arts Leather. Great for almost any combo. But not PR Spearmint an my juicy Esterbrook J.

I bought these mini writing pads to try them out. At the actual Staples store, I only had to buy a 2 pack, not a 12 pack. I don't mind the paper, but I really only use it as a scratch pad to test my inks or to write lists. And to be honest, I get the slightest bit of feathering with my medium nibs. Still, you can't beat the price!

Be careful with some of the other branded Staples pads. My office bought some of the non Sustainable Earth pads. It's the worst paper I've used every ink I have feathers in every nib size from Japanese fine to BBB. I wish I had a part number to warn others. I'm kicking myself for not begging our receptionist to order the "Sustainable Earth" pads instead.

If you ever get the chance, try the coffee leaf paper. I love how it plays with my ink.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I'm also from the Memphis area and I have purchased several of the spiral Sustainable Earth notebooks from our brand-spankin' new Staples (Germantown Pkwy location). I also purchased some of their Arc products and have been well pleased with them. A word of caution with the Sustainable Earth books--I had one from a good while back (year?) from the Nashville Staples and it is night and day over my new books. The new ones still handle a good bit of inks without too much bleed or feathering, but for lack of a better word, it's "softer" than the older version and not as likely to fend off line bloat or bleeding. My older book had a look to it that was similar to cockle finish onionskin paper, and the new ones are smoother and the printed lines are "softer" and broader. I think there have been some changes in the manufacturing process. Either way, they are still worth the low price and they have held up to a good many inks and pens.

I've been looking for the ream or copy paper. Hard to find. I know that Cane Fields is supposed to offer this paper, but finding it locally, isn't happening.

If you have one, I'd love to see a photo of what ink looks like on this paper! What colors do you like to use?

I had to give you extreme closeups because the notes had confidential info. The paper can be purchased by the small box or by the ream. I really love the paper. I think these inks were Private Reserve and Noodler's Eel.

I bought two notebooks of sugar canepaper from Staples and the one I didn't use is going back. Blah! Too much bleedthrough, showthrough, so I'm throughthrough with that.

My notebooks had the brown nature decorated cardboard covers and the great stiff back covers, for reference.
