Pen Recommendations

What are some opinions on these pens. Pros and Cons? It would be a huge pen purchase for me, but I'm excited.

There are two excellent reviews of the Danitrio Densho eyedropper fill pen in the Pen Reviews section of FPN. I recommend you read them and the long thread of comments building on them, and you will have all of the pro and con (not much of the latter) you need.

FWIW, I've never heard of any user having a "reaction" (other than aesthetic) to urushi. If there's a danger of physical reaction, it seems to me it would be for the artist who applies the urushi, not the user.

I second the recommendation of a Sailor 1911 as your third pen. The Togi nib is wonderful, and given that your other two pens are fine nibs, it might be a nice contrast to have a fat, juicy nibbed pen. However, if you like fine nibs, no one makes a better fine nib than Sailor (in fact, you'd probably find the Sailor medium to be fairly similar to the Pelikan fine).

The Omas Paragon is also a wonderful writer. So is the Edson.

I wish I had your resolve -- I could never settle on "just" 3 pens!

P.S. I trust you will share your final decision with us?

If you have narrowed your choices down to a Nakaya or a Danitrio, you have chosen good manufacturers. I would think your only difficulty now is deciding what size pen, what color and what size nib. Both of these brands are excellent. As Bill said, read the Dani Densho reviews.

I have also never heard of anyone having a reaction to urushi. I am a Persian Gulf veteran with all sorts of dermotology issues. My skin reacts to almost everything! But I have yet to have a reaction to urushi. My Tamenuri size Dani is urushi and I love it.

Good luck. I am excited to hear what pen you choose.

I think I have read all the reviews. They both seem to be amazing pens. I'll have to go with my gut on this one.

And what is your gut telling you? The suspense, man!

I think maybe my gut has stopped working. I'm having a hard time deciding because it doesn't seem like any of these pens are exactly what I want. I've been looking at Sailor pens as well with the togi nib. I'm just don't think I want another black pen.

I've got the ok from my spouse to dish out for a nice nakaya, but I just don't know if I can do it. I keep thinking "it's just a pen". Which is why I have been looking at the Sailor pens as they are quite a bit cheaper than a Nakaya or Danitrio.

I'm a little cautious about the whole eye dropper filler too. I've never used one and it seems like a lot of work everytime to get the flow to where you want it.

I wish I had the courage to say this is what I'm getting and that's it, but I don't.

If you're talking about the flow control of the DaniTrio, don't worry too much about it. I was concerned about how the feature would work before I got my Densho, but it's really not that sensitive a valve.

For me, it's usually just "turn roughly X revolutions" before writing. It's one extra step to be sure, but it's become second nature to me.

Yes, I agree with helius. The Danitrio's flow valve is really quite simple - just turn it a couple times and you're good to go. In fact, most of the time, I'd open it in the morning and not close it down until the day's end. Very simple that way.

I was actually thinking about a Nakaya, but I just wanted some opinions on other possibilities.

Thanks for all the input so far.

Well, needless to say that I started my introduction to this forum with my 2-3 week-old Nakata. I love so much how it writes that I'vo posted comments about it all around the forum ( ).

I love it, it is expensive especially not having a piston or eyedropper system, but it was cheaper than the other by Dani Trio and Namiki.

I think I should used the darn pen as my avatar....

Again, sorry about the size of the pics, I'm learning how to post them smaller!!!

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, I decided to go with a Danitrio Densho ED with the Tamenuri finish. Just figured I'd let everyone who helped out know.

Now I just have to find the right ink. Off to the ink forum.

You have a couple nice pens, why not something a little different for the third, like a Namiki VP?

I recommend to contact Kevin (Winedoc) , he is THE MAN to go to for any DANI pens.

In fact, I am thinking to get one myself sometime this year... (I only have 2 modern pens: Pel 800 & VP.)

Yes, I'm getting it from Kevin.

I think the ultimate reason I ended up getting this pen is because I know it's quality. Someone taking pride in their craft. This is important to me being a craftsman myself. I know the pen will be similar in size to what I have, but I can't wait to see the finish because from what I understand, you just don't get a finish on that with store bought pens. It's just not the same.

I had actually looking into a vp at one point, but when I wrote with it, I found that the clip was in the way. That was the main reason I didn't buy a vp like a year ago.

Thanks all for the recommendations.

Okay maybe I've changed my mind a little. Three pens may not be enough.

I had some store credit to Crane Co. and didn't really know what to do with it. I went in today and on pvdiamon's suggestion of something different I tried a vanishing point. I figured just maybe the clip wouldn't bother me anymore. And it doesn't. I hadn't really thought about it, but I don't really write right handed anymore and that's the hand I was having the problem.

I've recently gone southpaw and the clip is not in the way with my left hand. So I used my credit and got a blue carbon fiber vp. I've written a couple pages with it and so far so good. It will be a good pen to keep in my pocket. My other pens, while I don't mind carrying them around, they don't travel in my pocket.

Still waiting on the Densho. :bonk:
