How Much Sun Can My Ink Take

Recommended Posts

Final Posting for pictures at 1 week in my window. We had two days of run (which is rare in the desert).

I was surprised that the Pilot Bold Rollerball inks are still bright.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Create a Ghostly Avatar and I'll send you a letter. Check out some Ink comparisons: The Great PPS Comparison

Don't know where to start?  Look at the Inky Topics O'day.  Then, see inks sorted by color: Blue Purple Brown Red Green Dark Green Orange Black Pinks Yellows Blue-Blacks Grey/Gray UVInks Turquoise/Teal MURKY

Thanks for doing this. Did you ever see Gregg Clark's Ink Sampler booklets? His last edition tested and gave samples of 400 inks. For UV/Sunlight fastness, he would put the sample pages on his roof every morning, and take them back in at night....originally doing test for 10 days, but extended it until "last ink standing" went to 77 days when the paper itself deteriorated. His final best performing recommendation was Noodler's Black or Chinese made "Doctor Black."

There are some FPN threads here about it also.

With the new FPN rules, now I REALLY don't know what to put in my signature.

Oh dang, I got all excited when I read your post. Did you know that the website is down? Where can we find this miracle shopping list?

Your massive experiment is just wonderful. I am intrigued by the question of light fastness AND having all of those colors up there next to each other tells me a lot of very interesting information. For instance (and all of you folks who don't want to hear another word about the Blackest Ink turn away now) how Polar Black looks so much blacker than HOD. I just can't figure out HOD, I can't get it to blast away other blacks. Maybe it's just the pens I put it in. More research is needed.

I never realized how beautiful Noodler's Rabaul Red is. Should get a sample, and Bad Blue Heron. Thank you for your hard work on this.

I think his last version was 2006. My link was from Archive.org. He sold everything to some person named Kass Spurling who took a bunch of pre-pay orders from FPN members, and never delivered or returned money. But they are stock full of tons of useful information, articles, his tests, actual ink samples, magazine articles he wrote, etc.

With the new FPN rules, now I REALLY don't know what to put in my signature.

Thank you for the positive feedback. It's been a lot of work so it is nice to hear that someone appreciates it.

Here is the link to the 1 week observations where you can download the larger images. For whatever the reason, the side menu does not refresh when I upload the new additions unless you go back to the first page and click on the image to enter the site.

As for the "blackest" black, when I saw my sample of Polar black, I actually decided to re-ink my pen. I generally hate black ink, but something about how rich the Polar color looked, made me grab my marker. I filled the preppy with Polar Black and now use it for all our redactions. I then filled a pen with Bad Black Moccasin because it was the darkest when in a fountain pen. I've added a few picks here, you can see PB because it is so dark, HOD is washed out and BBM I have clipped to show with a writing sample. Check out the mashup doodle page to see the differences in a larger scale.

Here are the most recent images. In the next few days, I'm going to pull down the images hosted on the FPN forum and link directly to my website because I've maxed out attachment folder.

Anyway, based on some of your comments, I think this format will work the best. Click on the link below the image to go to a full size version of the scanned image.

One of the observations I found most surprising......

The thinner ink from the dip pen is standing up to the light much better than the larger swabs. This observation leads me to question if I had some sort of bleed over in the dipping????

I was surprised how all of the Reds are so pretty but not a vivid cadmium color.

And observation period 3

I had the darndest time scanning the Noodler's highlighter inks, and one of the blues came out bad, but you can see another copy next week.

BSB is fading fast, but then the vibrant color inks are all fading (look at the Visconti).

Highlighter ink other than noodler's is fading quickly and more than one are now completely gone.

Periwinkle isn't the same.

Have I mentioned lately how much I miss Swishers?

And WOW Cape Cod Cranberry is disappearing. But I still love it.
