So, Has Anyone's Twsbi Not Broken?

Bought a 580 in the summer and it seems to be working fine - I have it in my work-pen roatation so it sees action but I am not "rough" with it (nor any of my other pens). The other is a 540 I got last week, so time will tell...

My TWSBI 580 cracked today after 4 months. It was not a bad pen but I won't buy another. I paid 60€ for the TWSBI 580 and can get a new Pelikan M2xx for 70-80€.

TWSBI will supply any parts required to repair it.

I hope TWSBI ups their QC in the future and for their upcoming pens. I was going to buy a 580AL but decided against it after reading threads on here and reddit about broken pens. They have great prices, great customer service, but I just don't the hassle of having to deal with the hassle of replacing broken parts.

I have 3 - a Diamond Mini, a Diamond 580 and a Vac 700. The first two have experienced minor cracks and a quick email to TWSBI resulted in replacement parts landing through my door less than a week later. I also managed to lose a couple of seals from my Diamond 50P inkwells and they replaced them even though it was my fault.

I have several different nibs and they're just a delight to write with. So smooth and wet.

Current line-up:

Vac 700 (sapphire) filled with Diamine Twilight, 1.5 stub

Diamond Mini (clear) filled with Cult Pens Deep Dark Orange, 1.1 stub

Diamond 580 (s/s clear) filled with Diamine Teal, medium

I have seven and only the Mini had a broken clip, i'm sure it was during my time away from home and my door left open to my brother. Curiosity may have gotten the better of him haha. All I did was send a email and problem solved, I was sent a new cap. The customer service has always been great and Pendleton Brown has done a touch up on almost all of mine!

All four of my Mini's have cracked...even the one from Pendelton's Pens. No fault of his, just lousy material. I kept the nib.

My original 540 is still running strong with no faults or issues. Right up in the top 3% of my most reliable pens. Go figure.

I think that we have now established that 98% of all TWSBI pens have cracks, that is apart from the 98% that do not :wallbash:

I own three Twsi's and haven't had any issues with cracking, breaking or parts falling off. :) I own a medium mini, a 1.1 italic mini and 1.1 italic 580. So far so good! Some people just seem to have bad luck, or get all the duds. There's bound to be a few bad pens in with all the pens they actually produce and sell.

I know many of you have never had a TWSBI to crack, and many of you have. I've been away for a little while, and now I'm wondering - Has TWSBI done anything in the past six months to up their QC? Have they addressed the cracking issues? I know their customer service is top notch, and they gladly replace the cracked parts, but I'd appreciate it if the cracking problems were eliminated in the first place. You never hear tales of Pilots or Lamys or other brands cracking en masse. Any recent news?

Franklin-Christoph, Italix, and Pilot pens are the best!
Iroshizuku, Diamine, and Waterman inks are my favorites!

Apica, Rhodia, and Clairefontaine make great paper!

I bought a Classic and have been very happy with it.

Over in the VAC Mini thread Speedy has reported they've changed the material back to PC from PMMA on the VAC Mini due to cracking issues.

If PC is the material they use on the 530/540/580/VAC 700, I'd hate to see how bad the cracking could of been with PMMA.

At least they picked it up before release I guess ?

To my knowledge TWSBI have never acknowledged a cracking problem with their pens before, just quietly replaced parts in affected pens.

It's strange. Plastics aren't a new technology, and no other company seems to have this problem across their range. As they're cheap for piston/vac filling pens, do they use cheaper plastics and/or less rigorous QC ?

as far as plastics are concerned plastics will crack... having been to model kits I'm fairly aware than not all ABS resins are created equal so sad to say... some are softer and and more cutter friendly while others tend to be very delicate that can cause a lot of stress when cutting from the runners and these are both ABS plastics from the same brand :X and it's a grief shared by my most fellow model kit builders Edited by Algester

I have only one TWSBI 580 diamond. Had reviewed it here.

As far as the fit and plastics are concerned, they seem to be of reasonably good quality.During dis-assembly, the piston seal + rod were stuck inside. When I using tweezers to get them out, I was afraid of making some dents/scratches. Finally had to remove it using piston.

I haven't noticed any visible scratches after the "Rub-off with the sharp-ended-steel-tweezers".

And TWSBI has also placed a claim for having solved the threaded grip-section cracking problem in 540; with the 580 non-threaded grip section. I am not sure, whether there is a change is in the material itself. (just design changes I suppose)

Best,

Sonik
