So, Has Anyone's Twsbi Not Broken?

And TWSBI has also placed a claim for having solved the threaded grip-section cracking problem in 540; with the 580 non-threaded grip section. I am not sure, whether there is a change is in the material itself. (just design changes I suppose)

Both the 540 and 580 task a threaded feed sleeve with coupling the section to the barrel. Neither has a threaded section. The section, as the Goulets illustrate, is "nothing more than an outer shell" in both these pens (and the Mini, and the Classic).

Those injection molded feed sleeves cost about 9 pence on kit pen sites. I'm not convinced they will ever be suitable for use in the context TWSBI is applying them.

[edit - my mistake, 20 pence]

No sweat - I don't wish to sound critical or pedantic, it's just I wouldn't like for anyone looking askance at that particular design decision to assume it had been altered, and buy the 580 on that basis.

It's perfectly cool..I do agree with your point here, I too see it with reasonable skepticism.

I got a 530 during the very first run. Since then, I've picked up a 540, two Vac 700s, and a Mini. I still own and use them all and haven't had any cracking problems. Or problems of any kind, actually. And I've disassembled, reassembled, and played around with them all a lot. (Plus the usual writing, of course.) The 1.1mm nib on my 540 was drier than I normally prefer, but I was able to tweak it to my liking. Otherwise, I've been very happy with my TWSBIs and plan to get a Vac Mini once they're available.

I have a 580 and a micarta v2.

Both Work flawlessly and don´t seem to be fragile.

The nib on the Micarta is stiff as a nail though, whereas the nib on the 580 is just a Little springy.

I have four TWSBI's- a Mini, Classic, and two 580's. I've also got a couple of the inkwells. The pens have all performed well without any adjustments. None of mine have developed cracks. I usually carry mine in a hard case and make sure to not over-tighten the cap, which may help prevent cracking.

I am looking forward to purchasing a Vac Mini and the new 20 inkwell to go with it, when they become available.

Completely off topic. What's the dog in your avatar? Is it a sheltie? a collie? Just wondering.

Franklin-Christoph, Italix, and Pilot pens are the best!
Iroshizuku, Diamine, and Waterman inks are my favorites!

Apica, Rhodia, and Clairefontaine make great paper!

She's a Sheltie. The picture was taken at the beach in Seagrove Beach, Florida.

She's gorgeous. I had one for about 10 years, and now I love Shelties.

Apologies Everyone. Back to TWSBIs.

Ok: my TWSBI 540 has still not broken. How often do I have to keep reporting this? :)

Until people start reading the entire thread - or at least those from the last six months! ;)

When I sent my 580 in for repair one time, I was informed that it had a crack that I didn't even know about it. They replaced it free of charge. As for my mini, so far no cracks. That I know of anyway.

I've been using a 580RG that I purchased directly from the TWSBI website late last year. No issues with cracking or breakage of any kind for me. When I replace the cap, I twist just a nudge past free wheeling. Just enough that the cap doesn't rotate on it own.

Since years now I have been noting new post regularly added to this particular thread...

And every time I thank the fountain pen gods for how lucky I have been with my TWSBIs.

For me this brand gets, together with Lamy, the best quality/price ratio.

I broke my 540, cleaning with a HUGE Q-tip. I had removed the nib/feed section and wanted to clean some of the Bay State BLUE from the top of the main barrel. It was so tempting to run a Q-tip into the small entrance in the barrel. CRACK !! Did not realize my error until new ink was loaded. My remaining 4 TWSBIs remain unbroken. (2-580's, a Vac700 and a Mini)

I have 2 minis and 4 580's. I have never had any cracks or any problems with them. I think TWSBI is one of the most innovative and customer friendly modern pen companies. I hope they stay in business a long time and wish them much success in the future.

Here's my experience with 580's:

I have 3, and a 580AL. Two of the 580's are my daily carry pens. They get clipped to my right front pocket, right between my 4Sevens Preon Penlight flashlight, and whatever pocket knife I'm carrying that. Be it a small plastic handles Spyderco Dragonfly 2 or a full titanium ZT 0801. They've been in this role for months, and only get a break when I'm at work and they ride in my scrubs next to nothing but a Sharpie. The clips, cap bands, and filler knob bands have all developed character in the form of scratches. The caps, bodies, and filler knobs remain relatively scratch free (nothing major).

My 580USA and 580AL stay at home, or come along in my backpack in my Nock Co case. The 580AL comes to work occasionally since I usually have my Pendleton BLS in it and occasionally feel the need to take prescriptions with it.

The only issues I've had have been the threaded portions of the feeder sleeve breaking off. I take full responsibility for this damage, since I apparently tighten the nib sections too tight, lol. Either way, both incidences of this were promptly fixed by Philip over at TWSBI. My experience so far has been very positive and I will continue to own TWSBIs (currently waiting on the green 580AL).

So many inks, so little time...

Thanks A144, do you mean the right front pocket of your trousers, or jacket? Most plastic pens don't handle the bending stress of trouser pocket carry too well.

3 TWSBI so far.

Very reliable.

I use them for traveling. Especially the Vac700 together with the Vac inkwell.

It is really convenient to be able to ink those pens so easily.
