Firstly, That is wonderful handwriting and truly shows off that awesome nib! Secondly. Looking at the side by side shot of the nibs I cannot see how they can make the custom nib from standard stock nibs, just look at the end of the nib section. It is a different shape and a whole hunk of gold more. Perhaps these are hand made nibs, by that I mean custom cast from your specifications rather than simply a stock nib adjusted to them. I can't see how a stock Mont Blanc nib in it's broadest size could be added to in width in the way yours has.

If this is the case though I personally think $800 is excellent value already for a nib made to your exact requirements (remember folks, if you send it to a nibmeister all he does is shape and adjust the original nib) if it is as I am thinking it is looking at the side by side then the $800 looks even greater value to my eyes, that is a lot of work there!

Something tells me Ghost plane will be on the phone to them quick sharpeureka.gifcloud9.gif

Also, I am thinking Christmas present to my self of sending my 149 in for a custom nib, can they do older ones I wonder (1999)?

It looks like the double slit nib skips in your writing sample in the A, D, M, R, and W. It probably needs some break in time - really nice pens!

I would be on the phone if I had that much disposable cash. This definitely goes on the list to reward myself in future.

In the meantime, MikeItWork continues to work miracles on my pens.

That signature nib makes a dramatic line. I had a surgical attending who wrote with something that wide for his progress notes - in blood red ink. A brief note took an entire page. No mistaking who penned that!

I think this nib works more or less like a (very) broad Italic (probably even like a crisp one) and therefore has a fairly narrow sweet spot. If you don't put it on paper exactly in its sweet spot it will give the impression of skipping. Your hand might take some time getting used to it.

Anyway, these look to be wonderful nibs, rockspyder, may they serve you long and well.

Cheers,

Peter

As soon as this arrives to a locale I frequent, I will definitely give it a try. They look incredible - and a modern MB nib with flex! Who'da thunk it?!?! :notworthy1:

Too many pens; too little writing.

Rockspyder,

Thanks for the pictures and writing samples. Very intriguing. Can you elaborate more on the writing sample analysis that you went through in order for MB to store your writing preferences?

I guess I need to make a trip to New York sometime to do the handwriting analysis. I would love to have one of the 6B nibs. A soft OM would be perfect for daily writing since I tend to write larger when I am relaxed.

That is a beautiful nib!

As to mr Binders comments, like so many "experts" here I tend to ignore greatly what they say as they generalize. I have owned and used a number of Mont Blanc pens and have yet to find one that does not write perfectly right out of the box. I am sure there are others who have had similar experiences to Mr Binders but my feeling is that his comments are based more upon sower grapes as Mont Blanc like to keep everything in house, he has gone on in the past about bad design on Mont Blancs part and yet my personal experience has been that these pens are the most reliable and consistent of all the makes I have ever used.

I had the pleasure of inking up for the first time my friends Hitchcock yesterday, right from the get go it worked perfectly, I did not even have the opportunity to pre flush the pen!

I have seen a few of the pen guru's attack brands here and I have come to the conclusion it is more to do with protecting their interests rather than ours.

This is a luxury brand, whether you think they are worth it or not or the price is too high it matters not. Personally if it were me and I had the money I would do it in a heartbeat. Rather that as I can go back to the maker if there is a problem, than some third party who is going to invalidate my warranty by doing their work on the pen.

You are very very lucky to have no problen with your MBs.

Out of my 6 Meisterstucks and 2 LEs, two of them (149 and 75th year 145 SE) gave problem. I corrected them myself and did not go to any nibmeister. And of course, there is no nibmeister in India ( at lease I do not know any).

For $800 added on to the cost of a pen or as a replacement, it annoys me that they don't send back your other nib. After all, didn't you already pay for that when you first bought the pen?

They did when I swapped mine. Wasn't a customised nib of course but I would certainly request it back

That nib would take some getting used to. I just inked my O3B again today after a gap of some monbths, and am having difficulty holding the pen to its sweet spot for proper writing. Also I initially inked it with Pelikan Blue black, and that is a dry ink, I started getting railroads - I emptied, washed and reinked with MB Black and it is working fine now. The feed may have dried up a bit too and may take a while getting properly soaked wet again.

With a nib this broad I can't imagine anybody writing casually with it - it will have to be a proper sitting posture, and very deliberate strkoes.

No doubt the nib is beasutiful!! :puddle: :puddle: :puddle:

Lastly I do not wawnt to get into a controversy here, but Mr R Binder's comments have support by at least one other master pen repairman of the past, (the Late) Mr Arthur Twydle, UK.

Enjoy your pens

Have a nice day

O3B is one of my favorite daily writers. Did 61k words of my last manuscript by hand and it figured as one of the daily rotation, being written dry on a daily basis. :cloud9:

One thing is a bit unclear to me...is it $800/nib or is it $800 for the initial evaluation and nib and subsequent nibs would be slightly less? Probably the former, but I thought it was worth asking.

Lovely nibs Rockspyder!

$800 a nib is really steep! Then again, Montblanc isn't the company you go to when you're looking for the best bang for your buck :roflmho:

That dual slit nib looks like a joy to write with! Congrats!

The little things really count.

Very very very excited...

I'm off to Tokyo next week and I gather that the Ginza flagship is one of the stores offering this service. :bunny01: :bunny01: :bunny01:

A question for those of you who have gone through the process: once the tests are done, is it possible to order a pen from another location with a custom nib? For instance, if I wanted a special nib on an LE I was buying from London, could that be arranged?

Too many pens; too little writing.

Yes. Once your writing analysis is done, it is kept on record at the factory in Hamburg, and you can then order subsequent nibs via your local boutique, at any time, and for any modern pen, LE's included. Your local boutique would then send the pen to Hamburg for the nib to be fitted. Turnaround time was told to be 6-8 weeks, but they were finished much faster.

Good luck, I hope it works out well, and enjoy!
