Black Ahab

Recommended Posts

I don't usually succumb to impulse buys. I had clicked the thing saying Tell Me When It's In Stock. I got an email saying the item is now in stock, and pulled the trigger in a frantic lunchtime kind of way. Now that nice Mr. and Mrs. Goulet are sending me a pen, and I'm wondering what I'm in for.

Black Ahab, that would make a good band name...

I'm also in this boat. I ordered at 12:16 PM. I got my shipment notice at 2:08 PM. I'm about two hours from the Goulets. If USPS is as prompt as they are, I might have my package tomorrow! If not, it will be the next day. I know the Goulets give great service, but that's ridiculous. If they get much better, they're going to need a precog to tell them what I'll be buying before I order it so they can get it in the mail early.

Haha -- yeah, I ordered one too. An hour later it dawned on me that I forgot something and ordered that as well, asking if they could merge the orders. 5min later I get an email saying "sorry, we already packaged and shipped the 1st one". Sure thing, a minute later the "order complete" email drops in. Must be the fastest order-to-ship time I have come across so far. :D

The funny part is, I wasn't even sure I wanted one. I clicked the notification thing still undecided. Then when I saw the email, I clicked Add to Cart thinking it was probably sold out already! I guess this was the universe telling me I need an Ahab.

At the very least, I get to experience the much celebrated Goulet Packing Method...I'll have scalpel and blowtorch at the ready

Edit - true enough about the fast shipping. Unlike another establishment you hear of on here, who take three or four days to ship your order.

I told my girlfriend that I would be a good boy and not buy anymore pens. Today I succumbed to the force of darkness and bought a black one. She's not going to be happy when I tell her that I spent the money, but that's okay because I also bought a pink tiger for her. Devious, I know. ;)

I can see it now. "Dear, let me fill that for you and use it to make sure it is working properly. I would hate to have you use a pen that is not working as it should."

I just ordered one too... Didn't think I could be tempted into it...

I'm weaker than I thought, and I'm happy about. :D

Need a pen repaired or a nib re-ground? I'd love to help you out.

I got mine today. :yikes:

I ordered at something like 12:16 PM yesterday. Goulet shipped at something like 2:08 PM like I said above. I got my pen in the mail delivery that came at 12:24 today. I was so impressed that I emailed Mrs. Goulet immediately to gush praise and promised I'd update about just how awesome this buying experience was.

I will warn those of you waiting that my black Ahab stinks! I might not even ink it for a couple of weeks or even a month to let it air out. This is the first time I have gotten a stinky Noodler's pen, so I have sort of been wondering what the fuss is about. I guess my other pens have all had the fortune of being stuck on a shelf for at least a couple weeks somewhere along the line somehow. Fortunately, I know it's just a matter of a little airing out. I also really appreciate the work Nathan and his global partners put into getting the pen straight off the mold and into my hand so quickly. I'd rather have to wait a few days for the smell to dissipate than wait several more days to get the thing. As it is now, I can at least admire how gorgeous this pen is. Seriously, I love it. It is exceptionally classy looking in my book.

You can give it a warm bath in soapy ammonia water to get rid of some of the smell. At least it works on freshly turned acrylic pens that I've made. Keeps them from smelling like a nail salon.

Congrats!

Since I got three from the first non-black run, I am holding back telling myself that it's just like the others but a different color, that's all.... So far that's kept me on hold.

Placed my order 12:30 on 15th. Already had 2 Ahabs. Medieval Blue Lapis was the first order and I later ordered a Mandarin Yellow when the release of the Black was getting delayed (I "needed" to order something!). Wanted the black for a classy meeting pen. Should get it in todays mail.

Mail arrived a little early at my office today and the Ahab was in it. The folks at Goulet Pen Co. are amazing. 48 hours from placing order to delivery by regular mail. The black Ahab looks amazing and classy. Now I have to decide on whether I'll start with one of my Knox nibs or the original equipment.

I too have just placed an order for the black Ahab. It's going to be my first experience with a flex nib pen. If I don't like the flex, I can always add an aftermarket nib, so I figure it's a safe bet. Looking forward to trying this out! I guess it was Noodler's order, also picked up some Forest Green (Looked almost identical to the Iroshizuku ink at less than half the price) and Purple Heart (Impulse buy, looks to be a less "In your face" purple than the North African Violet).

With the Knox nib.

Very nice - especially the gleam off of the nib ;)

I can't buy one for another two weeks :crybaby:, but I may end up getting a Konrad instead if the Knox nibs fit. I'll probably get the black Ahab eventually (birthday, Christmas.)

I have a blue marbled Ahab and it smells kind of like cinnamon.

Funny. Wasn't trying for the gleam. I took the picture with my Blackberry. When I saw it, I did think it had a nice effect so went with uploading it. I swore this would be my last pen for a while, but I think I'll be joining you in getting a Konrad...then that will be my last...until the next one...

I received my Black Ahab today, from Goulet Pens. First thing I did was rinse the pen and did an ultrasonic cleaning. I soaked the barrel and cap in degreaser to try and get rid of that smell. the degreaser soak did a nice job of getting rid of a lot of the smell, but not all of it. I love the size of the pen, nice diameter and length. Much nicer than the Noodler's Piston Flex. I filled the Ahab with #41 Brown, very nice pen. I think that the Ahab is going to be a carry round pen. So far, I don't have any inclination to replace the nib.
