I Just Ordered A Hakase...

This is a very nice pen indeed! The horn makes it feel very sturdy, I am not afraid to use it (as opposed to say, silver that may get a scratch). Ten months wait is not very long! I ordered it on 2 may 2008 and received the pen 1 may 2009. I hope you will enjoy this model as much as I do. Ruud

Ruud - that's the pen which started the obsession. Absolutely gorgeous!

You also have a wood one, right? How do they compare (tactility, weight etc), and which do you prefer?

Too many pens; too little writing.

Provided it somehow fits into your budget, what price is too high for art you love and admire? If no one buys artful pens, none will be created and lovingly crafted. For me, that would be the saddest thing : ( .

So I just ordered a Hakase (buffalo horn, nipple, teardrop clip, F-nib). I have to wait 10 months and it will cost... rather a lot.

Tell me I'm not mad, because the buyer's remorse is kicking in big time!

You're not mad because, if you were, it would mean I am too!! I have a pending order as well. :puddle: I'll worry about paying for it later...

Seriously, the money is already on the side for it. I always planned on giving myself something very special for my 50th birthday, and this one should be ready just in time...

Congrats! If you don't mind me asking, which did you order (and how long's the torture)?

I don't mind at all. 59170 (rosewood and buffalo horn). I placed it a while ago and was promised delivery before my birthday in September.

Which model did you order? Forgive me if I missed it somewhere in the chain of posts.

This one, right? Gorgeous! I especially like the flat top and inlaid horn. Almost like a Hakase Double Jewel!

I ordered this (no. 37185)

Can I ask what nib you ordered? I ordered an F but think maybe I should change to an F-M.

Ruud - what nibs do you have, and what are their characters?

Wow, yours is beautiful, too! I considered that one as well.

I ordered F-M because I know F will be like an EF, as with all Japanese nibs I have used.

Good luck and start counting the days!!!!

Hakase uses Pilot nibs and feeds.

So if you have some Pilot pens around, the size of those nibs will give you a rough idea of what to expect.

I just received a Custom 823 in F. Great pen, great nib, but I think I may just wish it to a smidddddddgen wider.

I have two Hakase pens in cocbolo wood, quite light, and one water buffelo horn, feels heavier. The main difference is in the nibs, one has a stub nib that writes differently. I really like to feel these natural materials when writing. Very different from a solid silver section that is beautiful in its own right but does not feel as warm.

Did they grind the stub for you, or did you get it done by a 'meister on our side of the world?

Stub was made by Hakase, so I have two M/F nibs, and one stub. The stub has generous flow. Time permitting, I will scan a writing sample this weekend.

You are not mad. I simply love my Hakase! I use it more than any other pen in my collection and I promised myself to buy another one when I have enough money for it.

Thanks for those Ruud. That stub looks really nice. The good thing about buying from Hakase is that I have ten months to think about what nib I want!

If you can afford the pen and have decided to go through with the order, put the remorse aside and enjoy knowing that something exquisite is being created just for you. Anticipation is part of the pleasure of waiting for something special! If your pen is everything you had hoped it would be, in six months you won't be thinking about the cost of the pen. As the poet John Keats said, "A thing of beauty is a joy forever."

  • 3 months later...

Last night I was thinking about the Hakase order (something I do too much), and began having second thoughts about my choice of nib. I initially ordered an F, but my experiences with Pilots Fs (including the one in my Custom 823 - essentially the same nib as the Hakase will have) have made me a bit uneasy. I find them a bit dry and a bit lacking in personality compared to my Sailor Fs.

So, I decided to send a message to Hakase about the possibility of a stub or a CI. This is what came back...

"The bar such as the pen point of the CI is bold a horizontal line is thin and can do a thing on roundness smoothly slightly.

Please inform a bar of that case and hope of the thickness of the horizontal line

But I write it so as to attach a bar and the gap of the horizontal line, and the taste worsens"

I think I understand the first two lines, but anyone care to decode that last line?!?! :hmm1:

Too many pens; too little writing.
