New Lamy 2000 Awaited?

It's an outrage! Expensive, less-utilitarian and not even a Limited Edition.

It's German.... It's supposed to be expensive. :P

Stainless steel isn't cheap, thus the cost will naturally be higher than the standard Lamy 2000. Even if it isn't marketed as a Limited Edition pen, collectors will probably buy them simply because it's a different variation of the 2000 model. It may not be the most practical choice for those who wish to write with the pen often, but it's all subjective. Some people may enjoy writing with a heavier steel pen. Some don't. Whatever floats your boat, and all that.....

If you do not yet have a current model lamy 2000, you should get one right away. Not because they are vanishing, but because they are excellent!

There is something unique about the makrolon texture that is not found in other pens. Also, no worries about scuffs, etc.

This new version, I could easily a year or two for. I doubt it would be superior to the original. Unless you own a Delorean, then you should not wait.

I love the look.

I don't need (or use) the "little ink window".

It's gotta have the "little ears" to keep the cap on (probably just not shown, or its a prototype).

I'll start saving my pennies now ....

Better looking [minusthe ink window] does not equal less-utilitarian.

"Better looking" is extremely subjective; some people think a yellow '74 Nova with jacked-up rear suspension and huge slicks is the height of appeal.

Apparently so is "less-utilitarian", as it was never described how the new 2000 is less able to put ink on paper.

And although I wouldn't have equated a yellow '74 Nova with an ink window, now that you mention it...

I've only recently taken the plunge and bought one. I'm glad I did now as although in some quarters it is already considered a modern classic, it can only get more so now.

I contacted Lamy USA and found out some nice details. Probably the most important is that it will be available in the US in July at an MSRP of $375 with multiple nib options. The Lamy rep confirmed the image as legit, but didn't have any info on whether or not the cap system was redesigned.

I wonder what the street price will be. Oversea sellers seem to sell Lamy 2000 at around 30% discount... so about $270 for the new version of L2K?

I'm a big fan of Lamy, and the 2000 is my favorite FP. But this new edition is UGLY! The Edition 2000 brushed version was so much better.

Which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune.

The best choice might be to install this gripping section to the Edition 2000 if it fits.

Oh ? "This gripping section" looks pretty much like the ones from the regular 2000s... :P

Others may gripe about the new 2000. I'll gladly buy one. Can't wait. Notice the absence of the middle unit. Only one threaded joint. This will probably make a stronger pen. No more split sections. Now it will be perfect. Imagine . . . a wet broad nib ... mwahahahaha.

I am sure the pen has a plastic core, the steel being only the jacket. I am waiting for it to be released.

LOL. Sorry for all you Lamy fans out there...

When I made the statement about utilitarianism I guess... it was,

well, going by the definition of the word "utilitarian", which means

"Designed to be useful or practical rather than attractive."

Maybe my logic is flawed... I was thinking, how is the new 2000

"more able to put ink to paper" than the old one?

The new Lamy 2000 does everything that the old one does,

but it is just made with different materials... Precious stainless steel,

in this case! It's not a LE, so that is not a consideration for the price.

BUT IS IS INDEED VERY BEAUTIFUL! Looked to me like a rollerball from

the Edition 2000 series at first... But after close inspection, it was a nib!

Aesthetics is the main factor - do you like it's look or not?

To what degree do you like this new look?

The next logical thing that came to mind was pricing, of course.

Is the new aesthetic of the Lamy 2000 justifiable to the cost?

Is it "practical", or is it more "attractive"?

Is there a more "practical" alternative, pricing wise?

The original Lamy 2000 costs as little as 140USD, (when I got one)

compared to the 375USD. That's a far cry! Haha, just IMO...

But as another reply has pointed out, and rightly so....

A 30% off discount is a step in the right direction...

I'm a huge steel fan, so I think it's absolutely stunning. The fact that it has no window is actually a plus for me. I never use it in my current 2K anyway. I just empty it and refill every week. I've never run out.

I guess I should start saving now

You're not comparing apples to apples here. The MSRP of the current Lamy 2000 is $195. At a street price of $140 that's a drop of nearly 30%. If we assume this is the same for the new version then the street price would be ~$270.

The inspiration for the L2K was Bauhaus theory of design and if I am not mistaken, it says that beauty derives from a perfectly fit and functionnal design. So, if it is indeed practical, then it is attractive...

I stand corrected.... Form before function... you are indeed right... :notworthy1:

Oh, someone just told me that the Lamy 2000 I got was (fortunately) before the

price rise... So it isn't far off from the new 2000 after all... Oh well?
