What Ink Do You Use That Is Safe In Your Vanishing Point?

I have a few inks I would say - and there are some that creep all over my nib, get all over the trap door and had an ink blob on my clothes from it. Noodler's black for example is one of those inks in my VP that will get all over. Same with Noodlers red/black

Some that are safe in my vanishing points are Aurora black and waterman florida blue. Lamy blue/black worked fine in it as well.

Anyone else have issues with certain inks in your VP that will just get everywhere?

I've only just started using mine, but I haven't had any trouble with Waterman Florida Blue, or Iroshizuku Kon-peki and Kiri-same. It has a medium nib in it, but I also have a fine which I'm longing to try.

Any ink will get smeared all over your trap door, just because the nib tip is what initiates the door opening. What may be a problem is inks that leave a film or residue behind may buildup with eons of use. Other than that, I'd just stay away from inks that tend to creep a lot, and of course, any ink that you wouldn't feed a fountain pen. I have put Sailor Kiwa Guro (carbon black) and Pilot blue black ink in my Fermo, with no ill effects.

the point you make is valid.

Here is my problem.

I use inks such as Lamy blue/black, aurora black, diamine amethyst, R&K Cassia and I have zero issues with the inks in my decimo or vanishing point. They do not leave ink behind on the trap door, nor do they rub ink off the top portion where the nib touches.

Now, when I use Noodlers black, red black, la reine mauve, J Herbin 1670 the ink goes nuts. it gets all over the seat where the nib goes into the section. Ink goes all on the underside of the nib and rubs off all over the trap door, and the contact from the top of the nib rubs where the nib comes out and I cannot use the pen period. I cannot use those inks for that reason.

So my question is, are these properties of these certain inks or are my nib sections needing to be aligned?

Probably some inks will behave better than others. "Drier" inks that have less surfactants and the like may not be as much of an issue and this will quite possibly vary within brands. I have no problems with Noodler's Violet Vote for example but IIRC did have trouble with a different Noodler's ink. Wish I could remember which one it was. One of the PR dark blues gave me fits - again, been too long so I can't recall which one but I spent ages cleaning that out. But every ink I've used has put *some* ink in the nib area to some degree. It's just a matter of degree.

One thing I did find is that my VPs that had been in use for a while started misbehaving as a whole with every ink I used. I discovered that ink had built up in front of the trap door as well as behind it and I cleaned this area out thoroughly with a syringe until I had pure clean water coming out of both sides of the front of the pen. Apparently so much gunk had built up from many months of use and failure to flush the body of the pen that any overage with new ink was causing a mess. If you've had these pens for a while and haven't ever given them a good cleaning, I'd recommend doing so.

IF you do this - do not put anything directly into the front end of the pen and be careful with a strong jet of water. It's fairly easy to dislodge the spring that operates the door and you will be very sorry.

an ultrasonic cleaner is a good route to go if you're concerned about getting that area clean but don't leave the parts in the fluid for too long - VPs will rust if there are any small flaws in the metal.

Well - does anyone have any bulletproof or waterproof inks that they use safely in the VP????

I have very happily used in my Vanishing Points, Aurora Black (definitely not a dry ink and absolutely no issues in the VP), Waterman Florida Blue, Pelikan Brilliant Black and Pilot Blue and Pilot Black - mainly cartridges but I have also filled from their bottled inks.

I have not used the following in the the VP but I would also not hesitate to use Waterman Blue Black or Havana Brown in the VP or Pelikan Royal Blue, my experience with them in other pens has been exemplary.

I use Noodler's BB and Eel black in mine with no problem at all.

Mine seem to like PR Ebony blue, and Noodler's Navajo Turquoise. Waterman's blue black looked great, but was a hard starter, even in my 'Binderized' VP.

I'm going to try Diamine Billberry next....

As I said, I use Violet Vote daily in my VP with medium nib with no problems.

you might look into the "creepy-ness" of the nano inks as well. I don't know how much they creep but they are, as I understand it, pretty darn near bulletproof.

I haven't used these in my Vanishing Points, but I have had very good luck in other pens with Rohrer & Klingner Salix and Scabiosa, They contain iron gall and thus are water resistant, but they seem easily washable and I haven't seen nib creep.

I also love Lamy Blue Black, among the iron gall inks.

I don't know how much waterproofness you want, but a lot of regular inks do remain legible after being wet. Usually this is mentioned in the ink reviews.

Draless I've been using Noodler's Bad Belted Kingfisher in my VP (fine) for a couple of weeks with no problems.

I currently have BP Black, Violet Vote (F nib) and the dreaded (by some) Baystate Blue (M nib) in my three VPs. No problems to report. I've also run La Reine Mauve through without major issues, although it did tend to dry out a bit more quickly than the other inks. I've found that BSB works better (less drying out when not used, primarily) when diluted with water.

Mostly I use Waterman Florida Blue in my Vanishing Point. Sometimes I switch over to Sheaffer Blue. The VP is a robust beast and I wouldn't have any qualms about using any ink I own for it. ... Come to think of it, there's no ink I own that I won't put in my pens. Weird, huh.

It'll write wonderfully and reliably.

Ok - well i suppose my point has been misunderstood. I'll be the first to say I love Noodler's Inks - specifically Noodler's Black. My problem is that in my work environment I use my pen a lot and on the go. My VP is constantly clicking in and out. Once, when i had loaded Noodler's black for work, I had looked down after an hour and noticed an ink blob on my shirt, pants, and hand. To say the least I was disappointed in the condition in which Noodler's Black behaved in my vanishing point.

To prove my point I just loaded some Noodler's black to show you how it behaved after a few clicks in and out

I'm not quite sure if this is because my nib is not seated properly or just the way that Noodler's Black is in terms of properties of ink and how it behaves when it comes in contact with the metal clicking out

As you can see, only after about 10-15 clicks in and out the nib section is very very wet with ink

I wouldn't use an ink-pen combination either if it resulted in blobs of ink that stained my clothing.

Like you, I have found that some inks just don't work well with some pens. It's a great excuse to get some samples and do a little experimenting.

I know you wanted waterproof, but Pilot Iroshizukus do seem to work very well in my Vanishing Points. And I don't know your work environment -- maybe there's a lot of water around -- but it only took me a few ink drops in the wrong place to realize that washable inks have one very nice advantage.
