I finally inked up my fairly new purchase, a Hero 100, with Waterman Havana. The brushed steel finish. I remain impressed with how the Hero pens lay down an steady, even, fine line. The 100 is comfortable to write with. I like the additional heft it has over its semi-hooded cousins--the 329 and the 616.

I have a Baoer 388. I know it's useless and like trying to write with a nail. I know it can't have fixed itself sat in the drawer since I last tried it. I have no idea why but I gave a whirl today in the full knowledge that I'd have to give up and turn to something else. That something else is the excellent Kaigelu 316.

Sorry to hear about how your 388 behaves. I'm pleased with mine and get nice line variation.

Today's Saturday, and it's a writing morning, so...A gigantic M (but in fact just over F) nib Zhong Zhue Accountants pen with Rohrer and Klingners Alt Goldgrun (comes out a mid moss green on this nib), and a Black Duke Gentleman M nib with Slovenian Skrip Blue Black - which believe it or not shades beautifully on this 100gsm cream notebook. I have seven Blue Blacks, just bought the Skrip, and I was not expecting this lovely colour.

I've dipped a triumph nibbed Wing Sung 380 in the same ink and get a totally darker colour.

Aah...pens - more than just something to write with.

I might be old, but at least I got to see all the best Bands.

I am playing with two new purchases and a gift. They are all Heros.

A 1026 - steel nib, piston converter, fat juicy medium

A 300 - gold 12k nib, piston converter, more of a fine/medium that needed smoothing

A 100 - hooded gold nib, squeeze filler, buttery smooth fine with perfect flow

This is my first 100. It is factory refurbished and was a gift. Of the three pens it clearly has the best set up from the factory. I was warned when given the pen that the particular run when the pen was produced have cracking issues with the hood plastic. So, we will see. But at this time i am happily surprised with how it performs.

Nothing yet for me today (work combo is Lamy / Platinum) but tonight I'll be breaking out my Crocodile copy of the MB Boheme. It's not got the best converter in the world and doesn't like international cartridges so I need to find a better converter somewhere!

So I found three old Heros today that my parents received as graduation presents when they graduated from college from China (fine, so not that old; mid-1980's-ish); two of them are 100s and the other one I'm not sure about. They're fine with me using them, but I still feel iffy on whether or not I should. Any thoughts?

P.S. Oh, and right now, I'm using a Wing Sung, don't know what model, and since I got it from a cheap Chinese store, it's probably a fake.

100s are nice pens. You might fill them with water and leave them for a bit. This will allow any dried ink in the hood to break up. When you fill them with water you can observe the sac within the metal sleeve. Check it for pliability and how well it sucks up the water. It should be fine, but you don't want a surprise pocket full of ink. If you post a picture of the other pen, someone might be able to identify it.

A slim dark blue carbon fibre Jinhao 163 and Diamine Graphite through a medium nig (Which writes as well as a Duke nib, by far the best Jinhao writer I have).

As a quick heads up to U.K. FP'ers - I've been buying cheap Chinese pens for the last 18 months without a problem, but today I received a letter from Royal Mail informing me that they have three packages for me - all for pens less than £8/$11 in value.

I have been charged VAT on each package, plus a Royal Mail 'handling and collection fee' of £13.50 per package .

Maybe I'm just unlucky, or maybe this could be a sign of the newly privatised Royal Mail ramping up the profits asap.

Ho Hum.

I'm a bit smitten with the Crocodile 2010 Sapphire at the moment, their 'version' of the Montblanc Boheme already mentioned. It's the perfect pen and looks amazing... Even if it is a cheeky copy!

Hero Doctor (616 jumbo). I just received it in the post (£5 from a UK seller). First impressions are that the fine nib is "very fine" which means quire a bit of feedback when I write with it, but because it doesn't lay as much ink on the page as my other fine and medium nibs, it works well on cheaper paper or where bleeding/feathering happens. I've written "closest to writing with a ball-point".

It's a pen - it works - ideal for crossword puzzles, phone messages, shopping lists and other stuff.

Probably wouldn't use it for correspondence, but I have most substantial pens for that.

I am using a recently purchased Bulow X30 Affilato. It's a black enameled, gold-trimmed pen of moderate heft with a very fine semi-hooded nib.

The Affilato is a C/C pen, but I had some problems with ink bubbling out of the nib when I used a Cartier Blue cartridge. The cartridge didn't seem to fit snuggly. Switched to the converter filled with Visconti Black and all seems to be behaving well.
