What Chinese Pens Are You Using Today?

Used my Hero 3158 all day taking notes while documenting an upgrade on my XBMC box from Ubuntu 9.11 to 11.10. That was a chore! Now every time I use that pen my daughter and I argue about whether or not the animal on the barrel is a Bear or a Hippopotamus.

Also looking though my drawers for a small USB Flash drive (seems every drive I have is 8-32Gb) I found a 1990's Sheaffer NoNonsense with an Italic nib, no ink, no cartridge, and a lot of dried ink in the nib. Took several passes in my ultrasonic cleaner to get it clear. My first American pen, still like the Chinese one's better, so I won't be abandoning this thread anytime soon.

OMGoodness, people!!!! today i got the Jinhao 155 and just inked it up with Pelikan BB. it is beautiful!!! and the feel is great! its built feels as good as the Cross Townsend or the Century II -IMO, even better. the cap snaps so nice, it feels like a hydraulic system or something...

it writes a nice medium wet line (i'm using pelikan, which is kinda dry!!) and very smooth -but not buttery smooth. one still feels the paper. and IMO, that's good!!. the thing is, it's not a boring medium. it has character!!! i show pix of the writing later.

here's a pic from the vendor:

the cap makes it a bit top heavy when posted. but it fells right w/o it.

that's what i'll be using today!!

PS. this sounds more like a review...

Looks great!

I guess it is a chrome finish and not silver as it says in the ebay listing.

How's the chrome finish? Does it seem durable and thick and as if it will last, or does it give the impression that it will peel off?

The black version also looks gorgeous!

i dunno how familiar you are with cross pens, but it feels like the same quality as the Townsend or Century.

I don't altogether agree with you. The more opinions the better. What suits me down to the ground may not be good for you. Also more reviews will allow everyone to get a handle on the level of manufacturing variability - if every other review says something's a lemon, then maybe there is a problem and everyone else should steer clear.

Back on to the Jinhao 5000. It's got BSB in it now, so the ink is as spectacular as the pen.

Regards,

Richard.

I really, truly, don't know about the origin of Laban. I'd have a wild guess at either China or Italy...

Must look it up. Have looked it up. ROC. Ah well, live & learn.

Today I have my Kaigelu 319 & 323.

Regards,

Richard.

the way the cap snaps to close and the smoothness of the nib makes this one of my fav chinese pens.

That's a relief - it's not available on E-Bay at the moment. I currently have rather a long list of pens to buy as a result of this thread (Jinhao 155, Huashilai Dolce Vita, etc.) and no funds.

Ho hum.

I hold my hand up today. No Chinese pens. I thought my FPN pen needed some exercise.

Regards,

Richard.

Today is a Hero 3022 in orange inked with Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Black. I seem to be filling more and more pens with this ink.

I tried to adjust the picture to show that the pen is not quite this color orange and on one monitor it looks right but once uploaded Firefox is not rendering quite right. It is just a little less saturated than this.

Back to the pen, smooth nib, just not butter smooth; writes a line on the thinner edge of medium; nib is not quite a nail but it has only the smallest amount of flex; if you write heavy there is a hint of line variation. Not a bad pen overall, can only find red ones on eBay at the moment. Bought from YesPen, no affiliation.

Kaigelu 323 arrived yesterday. Just put some Waterman Florida Blue in it this morning.

<snip>

These are some of the nicest Asian pens I know. I have two, one blue like your example and one off-white. One is medium, the other fine. They are beautifully balanced and feel nice in the hand. They create the impression of being a much more expensive pen than they are. I think I paid somewhere around $30 each for them and I am very happy with them. I particularly like the screw in converter.

Well, today I used the cheap, nameless "accountant" pen I got. Incredibly fine line, the smoothest xxf line I've ever written with. Writes forever on one fill, but leaks a bit. Still, I'm very fond of it. Unfortunately, I can't find them anywhere, so I hate tocarry one for fear of losing it. Today was an exception.

I have the same pen with me today. It is very nice. My one has a fantastic pearlescent blue on the side opposite the clip. Now, if only I could get the blank to make a complete pen from it, or if they would make a complete 316 from the same material, it would be stunning.

Richard.
