Occasional use today for the "cartoon" Wing Sung 590, but mostly I've been using this mornings arrival.

The Jinhao 217, and what a pen it is.

Stunning looks and a super smooth writer to boot.

Straight into the "use every day rack" for this guy.

Inked with diamine sapphire blue, it's a lovely combination.

Still on the Jinhao 217 today, as well as a Red Jinhao x450, to put red lines through stuff.

The 217

I confess to being terribly boring.

I have an amber/grey Kaigelu 316 and a stainless Kaigelu 356. Both are flawless.

The K316 has a home ground ex-kit medium italic nib in it, which I am considering hacking at another nib to see if I can make a semi-flex stainless nib and putting it in instead of the current one.

Regards,

Richard.

Hi Richard, nothing boring about the Kaigelus

The semi-flex steel nib sounds interesting, and exciting.

A K316 with a flex nib, now that would be a thing.

A (AUS) $2.80 made in China fountain pen I bought from Daiso. The pen has a metal cap and body.

For its price, this pen writes unbelievably well, and the included blue-black ink (cartridge) has a very saturated, dark blue colour. It writes between a fine and a medium width.

I only have two pens - an Aurora Optima and others.

That Jinhao 217 looks intersting. Never seen it before.

It certainly is.

When I found it, I immediately came on to fpn to find out a bit about it.

There was nothing, not a mention.

The design is right up my street so I bought it, and I was awaiting its' arrival eagerly.

It is my favourite Chinese pen already by quite some margin (my k316 hasn't arrived yet, but it'll need to go some to overtake this guy).

The pen itself has a completely different "feel" to all of my other Jinhaos.

It feels very robust and solid. There is a satisfying "klunk" when you cap it or post it and you're left in no doubt that the cap won't fall off.

It's also odd that there is absolutely no mention of the manufacturer on the pen, other than the inscribed nib. Jinhaos usually have Jinhao and/or the model number somewhere on the pen, but this doesn't.

Even the convertor is far sturdier than the normal plastic Jinhao convertors. It has a brass section on it and it just looks and feels better quality. Again, unlike my others, there is no sticker with chinese symbols etc on the convertor either.

Without the nib you'd have no idea it's a Jinhao.

One thing I do know, is that it writes beautifully. I wrote out a presentation for my son between last night and today (8 A4 pages) and the pen was flawless. Very comfortable and super smooth, a pleasure to write with.

The style is what attracted me to it initially, as it has a similar shape (slightly slimmer) than my beloved Arbutus Apollo.

The polished copper may not be everyones cup of tea, but the build and quality of this pen really does make it look and feel like a pen far more costly than it's lowly pricetag would have you believe.

It has a decent bit of weight to it (36g posted) yet it feels beautifully balanced.

Honestly

If you like the look of it, get one, or two, or even three, it's that good.

Here are some pics of it..apologies for the poor quality, but they'll let you see how it looks.

I just can't rave about this pen enough, It is a beaut.

Thanks for the mini review. Very helpfpul. I guess I should order one. My only concern was the diameter. It looks reasonably large. I've ordered more than a few pens from ebay only to get them and find them really too small for anything but short notes.

What other Jinhaos do you have?

If I have any the same I'll take a pic of the 217 next to a pen we both have to give you an idea of the size.

I bought a three-pack of Hero Doctor/Jumbo, and they arrived yesterday.

The black one's nib had fallen out in transit, so I'm going to work on it at the weekend.

I inked up the green one, and it was just a little scratchy.

I worked on the nib a little with micromesh, and now it writes beautifully.

It puts down a nice wet line that is actually a little broader than I was expecting, which is a good thing as far as I'm concerned.

I mostly use evernote for my note-taking at work, but I've been finding excuses to use my pen :D

My Baoer 388 in black arrived today and I love it.

It's a medium but it seems quite significantly smaller than the Jinhao medium, for example. I am pleased. I have a fine coming at some stage too in the 801, so it'll be interesting to see how fine that is!

The 217 pictured alongside the 450.

As you can see there's not much in it, except in the looks department of course.

Theres not a lot in it weight wise either, with the 217 being 37g and the 450 being 42g.

I've been using it non stop since I got it and it is magic.

Cheers

Still using the J217 today, but red line duties have been handed over to my red/black Bauor 388 with diamine oxblood.

Had a bit of a write with the Jinhao 1200 silver and gold as well, (blingtastic), inked with China blue.

Jinhao x450 in cream/ivory.

Beautiful looking pen :)

The 450s are great writing pens. I have 2, a red and a wine/red and both write beautifully.

They are very comfortable to use and have a nice balance.

I'm not overly keen on the look when they are capped, but hey, aesthetics aren't everything and so far mine have been very reliable, and strangely enough, I feel the need to buy another.

Enjoy your new pen.
