Oh, No! Diamine Ancient Copper Problem

ever onward

Recommended Posts

I still have yet to see even the slightest hint of it. OTOH, I still follow the same regimen as before--no pen inked for more than a month, pens ultrasonically cleaned and stored dry, if a pen doesn't have an good cap seal, it doesn't get used for more than several days at a time.

I know my id is "mhosea", but you can call me Mike. It's an old Unix thing.

My own experience leads me to believe this is the key. Viz: I've had AC inked for several months at a time in both a TWSBI Vac and Parker Vector and not had a problem. But three days in a cheap Oliver Exam (a chronic drier-out) and it was growing a beard, while a Herbin rollerball needed to have its tip wiped before use every time from the get go. For a crud-free life I just avoid putting it in pens that dry out readily.

Cheers, Al

I had Ancient Copper in a Noodler's Creaper. Within a few days it evaporated and left a big blob on the feed/nib. Not impressed with the pen but it got me comfortable with all the parts.

Ancient Copper is probably my favorite color ink to use in my Pilot VPs with EF nibs - but I have from day 1 gotten the crud on the nib after a week or so. I thought it was caused by a poor seal in the pen (VPs seem magical and unknowable in their mysterious ways...), so I tried it in other VPs and my Cross Townsend - same problem. I still use it because I like the color, and it doesn't seem to hurt anything - just wipe off and refill.

Glad someone resurrected this thread.

I was thinking of getting some, but as I'm more of a "fit & forget" person, I think I"ll pass.

Now I have to look for a suitable replacement without similar issues.

I love the color, but didn't like the issues. A good substitute that I found was Noodler's Antietam.

Thank you for that, Antietam does indeed appear to be similar.

However, sourcing it in the UK may be an issue, the closest I've seen is Noodlers Habanero.

For me, I don't think there is a substitute for this ink when you factor in everything that's good about it. I mean, if matching the color is all that one cares about, surely there is something else that will suffice, but DAC is on my short list of special inks for its performance in all respects. Everybody is different about what bothers or delights them the most, I guess, but the way I see it is that if you like the color, it's a shame to pass on it over something that is neither a performance nor safety issue.

Interesting view and one I might consider adopting.

Question really is how relaxed am I on accepting a substitue.

Just got a bottle of Ancient Copper. I love the color. As of the moment, it's my favorite ink. Hope the problems have all gone away.

Very glad I read this. This ink is on my wish list. Removing it.

Franklin-Christoph, Italix, and Pilot pens are the best!
Iroshizuku, Diamine, and Waterman inks are my favorites!

Apica, Rhodia, and Clairefontaine make great paper!

Although you'd rather not have it...it makes for a a great photograph.

Actually there is a certain beauty to it :)

Sorry, double post

Firstly, DAC is an awesome ink!

The ink crud problem is still around, however it's not too irritating once you wipe your nib & experience the awesomeness again :)

I have it in Eversharp Symphony - which I noticed has a breather hole on the cap underneath the clip (so it ain't airtight)....I'll be trying to seal the home & see what happens - I wonder if that'd cause any issues when capping the pen?

These holes are usually below the inner cap, alongside the grip section, not up alongside the nib and feed in the cap. Measure to be sure. When the cap is threaded on, the end of the section usually presses against the inner cap. The seal is not great, since it's just one part pressing against another, but it isn't like there's a hole in the cap where it counts. I'm not sure if sealing them will help very much. It might, or it might not. I think the only consequence will be, at most, some pneumatic drag as the pen is capped, and, more importantly, as it is uncapped (since the negative pressure could suck some ink out of the feed). You could try covering them with some blue painter's tape to experiment.

Thanx for the explanation mhosea :) ... will let you guys know what happens.

One thing is certain, there's nothing growing inside my ink bottle!

I've had this issue now with two of the Diamine inks, Ancient Copper and just today, with the Chocolate brown... in a variety of pens. I am not impressed!

UPDATE:

After sealing the breather hole on my cap, I cleaned the nib, wrote a few lines & left the pen to sit for a few days.

Well...the crud's still back on the nib. After a bit of wiping, things go back to normal.

Not cool!! I hope someone finds a solution to this...
