Oh, No! Diamine Ancient Copper Problem

ever onward

Recommended Posts

Ugh! Diamine Copper is creating a frothy-ish goop on the underside and upper-side ink channel on my Bexley Americana's nib.

I've read here in other posts that if you get the goop, your only viable option is to avoid the ink. Ack! I love this ink. Should I try another bottle? Or is this happening to others, and thus appears to be a problem with this color in general?

Thank you for your thoughts,

This sounds similar to a benign phenomenon caused with an orange ink by Diamine.

I haven't experienced this issue. I haven't had it in very many pens yet.

I noticed a weird (not frothy or gloopy) deposit of orange crud on the underside of the feed on one of my Sheaffer school pens after using a cartridge of the Slovenia-made Sheaffer orange. Maybe it's just something that happens with orange inks?

Has not happened to me yet with Diamine Ancient Copper.

I've had this happen to me with a cheap Hero 266 pen. I thought maybe it was the pen rather the ink because the same thing happened in this pen with Higgins Sepia. Instead of nib creep, it's like feed creep! The pen still writes all right. It's not clogged, it's just messy and I have to wipe it off.

This happened in my MB 22. I had a devil of time rinsing it out. I think I would be cautious in using the ink. I love the color but...

I've had it happen with Waterman Havana Brown and J. Herbin 1670. It took ages to rinse them out, like you said. Both created an annoying, crusty build-up around the nib and feed.

I had a problem like that - diluted the offending gloppy ink with water 1:1 and added 1 or 2 drops of Dawn into the ink bottle. After shaking it up each time before inking, it worked on most, but not all my pens. I used this only as my last option, since nothing else worked. YMMV

Some photos would help the diagnosis of your problem.

Thanks to everyone for your input. I think I'll just keep wiping off the goo and then see how the cleaning goes once the converter is used up.

I'll add a pic if I can get a good close-up of it...apparently my camera is not that great.

thanks again,

eo

Whoa! That's nasty! Looks like a bacteria bloom from a Yellowstone pit.

I've not had any issues with Ancient Copper in 3 different pens. I DID get some tiny sludge balls on an Ahab with Diamine Evergreen. I cleaned the pen really well, and shook the ink bottle gently for the next fill. No further issues.

Have you contacted Diamine?

I ink, therefore I am.

I don't think the photo is of nib-crud from Ancient Copper. If you check at the bottom of the photo, it is labelled R&K Helianthus

I'm interested to see a photo of the OP's nib though.

Aha! I was just going to add, "Yes, like that, but darker."

And I'm so sorry, but I can't add a photo because I can't get that close up with my camera. But the goo looked like the Helianthus picture but darker, only in the nib split (both on top and underneath), and much less...virulent-looking and prolific. But definitely the same type of goo.

Have not contacted Diamine...see above re: limited camera capacity.

best,

If that's the issue you have, then, it's nothing to worry about. I have a similar problem with Diamine Pumpkin. I believe that it's simply the pigment from the ink left behind when the moisture of the ink evaporates. Seems to only occur with the yellow/orange inks, so must be a particular pigment. It is unsightly, but doesn't damage the pen. I usually just wipe the nib before I use it, and rinse more frequently in between fills

Wow, so far I've only used my Ancient Copper in my Pilot Prera and haven't seen anything like that on the pen. I'm certainly going to be keeping a close eye on it though as Ancient Copper has become one of my go-to inks. Love the terracotta look it has not to mention its excellent shading.

Do you store your pen nib-down or flat? I wonder if that makes a difference?
