Staples Waterman Cartridges Incorrect?

Recommended Posts

Last weekend I went to a local Staples after a coworker told me they had Waterman cartridges. They did, and I was very pleased, but the cartridges seem to be much thinner than the cartridge that's currently in the pen.

However, when I looked closer I realized my old cartridge is also thin, but it becomes thicker partway down, almost as though a plastic tube is around the lower end of the cartridge to make it wide enough to fit the barrel of my pen. Does Waterman make two kinds of cartridge -- wide and thin -- or is the plastic tube that widens the cartridge on my pen supposed to be removed and put on the new cartridge [though it doesn't look like it comes off]?

what pen do you have exactly? some older pens like the CF takes a type of cartridge that's now discontinued.

I'm not sure what pen it is. I asked about that in another post in this forum, "Can Someone Tell Me What Waterman This Is?" I got several replies, one including a photo of the identical pen in a different color.

Unfortunately the last reply in that thread said, "I think you'll find it takes CF cartridges." Not good news if they're discontinued.

The CF cartridges have been discontinued for many decades. If you have one hold on to it and refill it.

You can also often find CF style converters either on eBay, directly from Waterman and also from our member Lewertowski.

Hi Miket_nyc

Alas you do not show where you live. From your name possibly in New York??

Here is a link in the UK of a site that claims to sell Waterman Cartridges also for de C/F pen... I am not familiar with the site, but you could send them a mail asking about it. If you nget a positve result, please report back here, there are many like you with a similar problem. Because of that problem I am not buying a C/F pen although I admire them...

The pen I bought writes better than any pen I've ever used -- just the right combination of fineness and flex -- so I'm getting by refilling the cartridge I have with a hypodermic syringe. Maybe I'll get a converter eventually.

But I also noticed something hopeful yesterday -- the new cartridges are identical to the old ones in the design of their front end, and the length would be identical except that the front of the old one is slightly squashed. The only difference is that the old one is thicker, so the new ones could work if I wrap tape around them to bring them up to that thickness. Now that I know there's no other cartridge I should/could have bought, I think I'll give that a try.

Thanks! I contacted him by e-mail and just bought one of his converters from Amazon for $11.00. If it's wrong I can return it, but otherwise that's a small extra price to pay to get such a good-writing pen.

I got a converter for my Waterman C/F by calling Waterman's Canadian distributor and told them that I had one of the "old style cartridge" pens. The apologized that the converter was more expensive (well, we are Canadian) but I had it a few days later.

That converter goes for premium prices in any country (AFAIR around 20 euros here in Europe)

The converter arrived, and shipping from France was $9, so the $11 price isn't as good as it sounds. I was initially hesitant to try it on the pen because the converter is narrower than the pen and the hole in the rubber tip seemed too small. But I was wrong -- it easily stretched around the prong that punctures cartridges on the pen. I also wrapped tape around the front of the converter to enlarge the diameter a bit and prevent any possible movement. Otherwise the converter seems well made and should work fine. It's a design where you manually squeeze the bladder, like the Parker 51.

Also, I read somewhere that older Waterman cartridge pens will fit the so-called international cartridge if you push the cartridge on manually (the cartridge is too short to be pushed on by screwing the pen together). They're very cheap and available here http://www.amazon.com/Monteverde-International-Cartridge-Turquoise-G302TQ/dp/B002IKK668 so I plan to give these a try also.

In short, people shouldn't avoid these pens because the cartridge is discontinued, because there are other options out there.
