Linley Desk Blotter Review

I thought for my first review of FP accessories it might be nice to review a desk blotter.

Many of my friends no longer use a formal desk blotter; except for those given away free by suppliers at the office which tend to be covered in adverts for shipping services, photocopier repair and packaging.

This blotter was purchased from the Linley store in Pimlico Road, London SW1.

 

 

Appearance:

The blotter is made from solid walnut sides and base with side details mainly in sycamore, but also burr walnut, rosewood and ripple sycamore. The two decorated side panels conceal a small groove in which to locate the blotting paper ensuring little or no lateral blotting paper movement. The base is covered in dark blue felt and is stamped with the standard 'LINLEY' signature.

 

Paper:

The blotting paper is thicker than most I have used, I would compare it more to water-colour paper as it has a very slightly dimpled effect, but not enough to knock a fountain pen 'off course' while writing. I am still using the spare sheets provided free by Linley, but will have to either buy a few more or talk to my excellent local stationer to find an equivalent at a reasonable cost.

 

Dimensions:

The blotter measures 585mm (23") across and 460mm (18") deep and rises of the desk by 13mm (0.5").

The width of the blotting paper surface is 470mm (18.5") into the side grooves and 460mm (18") deep.

The pen I have used in the picture to give an idea of scale is a Graf von Faber-Castell Classic Fountain Pen in Grenadilla Wood

 

Value for money:

This blotter is not inexpensive however, on my rather plain desk it almost becomes a piece of furniture in its own right.

 

This might be an 'antique of the future', but I'm enjoying it in the here and now.

If they were available here I'd be tempted to save the cash and buy one. The good thing about quality like this is you usually by something that lasts for life.

One can spend that on a Mont Blanc.

It's a piece of art - absolutely beautiful and price is reasonable given how stunning it is. I want one.

Now that is a very nice piece to have on ones desk. It's especially nice to be thinking that far ahead about leaving it to your child!

350 pounds for a desk blotter? I think I will just stick with my J. Herbin rocker blotter. Sometimes I just use blotting paper with no blotter, and have not had any problems. What would be the advantage of a desk blotter?

It looks nice on your desk, provides a nice surface to write on, and would make blotting large pages easier.
