Cigar Box Pen Storage Case

I have found several (sterling) silver-ware wooden boxes at yard sales, these can be converted to very large pen storage boxes. I didn't know where to buy pen trays prior to reading this blog. I bought an air conditioner filter (one side has the "vvvvvvvvvv" type slits) and I painted the cardboard surround a dark red to match the liner in the box. The opposite side of the a/c filter does have a chicken wire in it & crisscross cardboard so you don't want to use that side but it does give the trays some support. They are also sturdy enough to serve as stack-able trays. I may soon be ordering some actual pen trays but my redneck method served well rather than them getting scratched up.

Seeing these threads, and having a few cigar boxes lying around, I was inspired to try my hand at it as well. I took the foam tray from a travel humidor and trimmed it to fit the box. There's only 1 tray at the moment, but it'll hold another to house 12 pens altogether (which is more than I need at the moment. Total investment about 2 minutes (including the minute I spent searching for the scissors) and $0.00......

All this inspires me to start making my own cigarbox-pen-box!

Thanks to all!

Great step by step! Here is my first completed box, which I constructed this past weekend.

The box is an Ashton VSG Torpedo box. I figured I'd start out easy, so this box is only deep enough for one layer. I lined the sides with self-adhesive cork material (cabinet/drawer liner at Home Depot) so the pens wouldn't hurt themselves banging around on the wood. I also put a few layers of cardboard under the gopens tray to raise the pen height a little bit.

I'm certainly happy with how it turned out! I also picked up a Legend Ario box that is much deeper than this one that I plan on making a double layer case. Will let you know how that goes!
