Quite a few absolutely stunning projects in here! I'm getting inspired!

I use cigar boxes for pen storage, and found a very cook leather Gurkha box that I have been using. I use a variety of different sized boxes for ink storage, note card storage, etc. I found most of mine on eBay (so I may have been bidding against some of you, sorry!).

Some of you need to be in business with the quality of your work! I'm envious!

The cigar box with trays was the solution I was looking for.

Now I am the proud owner of a Saint Luis Rey cigar box I found at Etsy.

Thank you very much!

Love this thread, just got my hands on a Playboy by Don Diego cigar box (I don't smoke, just wanted the box). Going to make my own case too!

And once you get several cigar boxes fitted for your pens, you can make a cabinet like this:

:D Well, it could work....I would make a few changes but I thought you all might find it amusing.

I don't need any more storage boxes right now, because I don't have enough pens to justify more storage, but I am still looking and finding lots of project ideas. I have a couple of cigar boxes very nicely modified to my specifications by John H. (BamaPen) but I think I would like to try my hand at modifying my own, This thread is inspirational. :)

This is a great thread. Great idea. I went to cigar store and was disappointing that the empty boxes cost so much so I went to Michael's and found a nice box. It is heavy cardboard I am sure but has nice flower design in and out and closes securely and quickly with a magnet. I also got some stiff thin foam. I plan on creasing the foam to make peaks and valleys and gluing it into the box. Deep enough for two layers. Maybe I can upload a pic of my before and after.

So many pens. So little time.

Just an update, here are the two boxes I'm currently using for pens (I have two others that I lined w/ textured felt in which I store bottles of ink):

If you don't have a local tobacconist you could try Pipesandcigars.com Nice selection of boxes or check the clearance section where thy offer 5 random boxes for $10. I have no affiliation with this retailer but I did order the five boxes and got a nice collection. Mostly smaller boxes but they will still make nice pen cases when my order of pen trays comes in from Pendora.

where do you see that option? all I see are the individual boxes for $6 or $7?

Nice pen boxes. Here is a few photos of the cases I built. I used 1/2" X 1/16" balsa wood for the dividers and after glue set up I flocked them to protest the pens. (just google flocking)The glass tops I cut from old picture frames. The flocking comes in several colors. I used a razor knife to cut the tops and the balsa. To get the two trays, I cut the sides that are in most cigar boxes(some are glued in and come easy)in half length ways and glued them onto a piece of crafters plywood. I made a try to hold the pens I am working on out of cardboard, coated with shellac then flocked it. works great, should be able to do it for trays in cigar boxes. If any wants more info I will take a few detail photos of the process. goodluck

Where do people get these cigar boxes?

There are more cigar boxes than you can count on eBay, often for very reasonable prices.

A good many Etsy sellers also sell them. I've gotten a bunch from "Industrial Planet" there, for example.

Some cigar sellers, such as neptunecigars.com, also sell empty boxes (though selection may be limited).

Local tobacco stores often sell them very cheaply.

This site -- http://www.buycigarboxes.com/ -- is currently hors de combat, but once it's up again may be worth checking out.

I tried to post a photo essay I've created showing some of what I think are the better (or cooler ;) ) boxes I've found to store pens in, but sadly I ran afoul of the board's limits on posting image files. Trying to find another way to get it done.

My older son is turning 7 next week. He's showing interest in fountain pens and wanted a personalized storage box. So I went and picked up some cigar boxes at a local smoke shop, let my son pick out the one he liked, and made a storage box for him. Just thought I'd share some before & after pictures.

That's the Montecristo Epic Red #2 (I believe that's the full formal name -- "Montecristo Epic" is usually enough for a search). I have four or five of them I'm going to work on converting for pen purposes. Getting them for $6 is a great price; they typically go for $10-25 (plus shipping) on eBay.

The wood inside is so smooth it shouldn't pose a threat to most pens, and as you can see the box is gorgeous (and heavy). But you can line 'em with felt (or the like) to be sure, and/or to keep your pens from rolling around.

Montecristo also makes an Epic yellow box that's likewise great for pen storage (though the wood's somewhat rougher). Caveat: it comes in a couple different sizes, one of which is too small to hold longer pens. You can see pictures of the larger one here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/MONTECRISTO-EPIC-PREMIUM-SELECTION-2007-HARD-PLASTIC-CIGAR-BOX-EMPTY-/261602346034?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3ce8b70432 (Note: not endorsing this sale in any way; it just has good pictures of the box for educational purposes.)

Mods, if this is in the wrong forum, please move it.

I have been wanting a pen storage case for some time now. My pens are all over, some in drawers, some on my desk, and some still in their boxes.

Nothing I have seen has jumped out at me and said take me home. I did see a case made out of a Cigar Box and since I have a number of them I decided that was the way to go.

Here is a Step-by-Step with pictures on how my case came together.

The pen trays were ordered from gopens.com, there are 6 colors available, I choose the Gray.

Here is the box I decided to use. I chose this one because I wanted 2 trays. The size is 11 1/2"x8"x2"

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b243/bobioden/Chest1.jpg

Here is a pic of the inside of the box

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b243/bobioden/Chest2.jpg

Here is a pic of the grey trays

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b243/bobioden/Chest3.jpg

I needed something to support the top tray. These paint stirrers for Ace Hardware fit the bill. They were also free. They are 1" wide so I cut them down to 3/4" with an Exacto knife. I doubled up on the side ones to give it some more depth

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b243/bobioden/Chest4.jpg

The box with the side supports

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b243/bobioden/Chest5.jpg

After cutting the bottom tray to fit, this is how it turned out.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b243/bobioden/Chest6.jpg

I used a piece of fiberboard cut a bit smaller than the inside dimensions to make the base for the top tray

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b243/bobioden/Chest7.jpg

Here is how it looked in the box

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b243/bobioden/Chest8.jpg

I cut another gray tray and glued it to the fiberboard, and added some tabs to the sides so I can remove the tray when I need to get to the bottom tray.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b243/bobioden/Chest9.jpg

Here is a look of the top tray in the box

Bottom tray with pens

Top tray in box.

The whole project took all of 2 hours tops. I like the fact that all my pens are together and I was able to use one of my own cigar boxes. This case holds 28 pens, as my collections grows, I will just make another smile.gif

Any questions or comments are welcome.

that's a wonderful idea!

Flex Away :D

If you dont smoke cigars, u can go to any cigar store and get them.

I used a low profile box and put a liner in , holds 10-12 pens. Nicely. Lazy mans way.

Op. Nice job ..

And now i converted my humidor to a pen and ink storage.
