I’ve just received slotted trays from gopens.com for the pen storage box.

I’ve decided to use Japanese confectionery gift box for my 1st project.

Japan is well known for their packaging and this one is no exception - well

constructed box with high quality material and nice coloring.

Btw - This box originally contained Cheese Cake and just the right size for 6 pens.

My next project is using the cigar boxes given away by FPN member (JDE) at the Louisville pen meet back in July.

Each one holds 13 pens.

Now I need more pens to fill the boxes. :headsmack:

Wonderful ideas! Now I feel terribly guity that my pens do not have a home!

i like it a lot i wonder were i could get a box from as i dont smoke?

Just walk into a Tobacco shop and ask. I got one for free. If the shop sells individual cigars the box eventually empties.

Looks great, nice work!

I made a cigar box into a pen storage box, but I did not think to support my upper tray with the paint stir-sticks as you did. My top tray is affixed to a heavy cardboard, once part of a legal tablet. My upper tray just rests lightly above the pens below. I think I have some more work to do, yours is definitely better. I like the supporting sides you made out of the paint stir sticks.

My pen trays ordered from gopens.com are black and were very easy to cut to size.

So much to learn on this site. So many good ideas shared. Thanks for posting with pictures.

Great idea! Thanks for sharing and taking time to take the pics. Those pen sleeves are a great idea for people who leave their pens lying around in draws getting all scratched up.

What else do we have in life if not to help each other?

I'm a huge fan of the cigar box to pen case conversion and performed one on a surprisingly high-quality Michel Delacroix art-inspired Montecristo Platinum box which is one of a series of four. It was fairly simple to complete and the hardest part was actually trimming the slotted display trays I got from gopens.com down to size.

As I wrote earlier this week, for some reason the fountain pen bug has bitten me again and I'm planning to experiment with a few different approaches to creating internals for cigar box conversions. I found three more Delacroix boxes this week and have them on the way - I'll probably try to sell one of them when I'm done, just to get some of my expenses back out of them.

But in the meanwhile, if anyone has a good tutorial for creating custom internals in the form of deep, wooden slots, covered in felt, wholly removable, I'd like to read it. As I said, in my conversion I used pre-fab tray liners from gopens.com and they worked fine, but this time I'd rather create INDIVIDUAL mini-coffin spaces for each pen. I'm sure someone has done this before and can explain it - I'm about the least wood-working savvy person in the world though, hence why I'd like some help. Thanks.

Note, in the image above I've since replaced the grey tray liner with a more pleasing tan colored insert.

Can anyone recommend a UK supplier for the type of pen trays used here. I need some for a little project of my own.

I don't have a tutorial, but I did make a cigar box into a two tray pen storage unit. I made the trays from basswood purchased at Hobby Lobby and lined them with sticky-back felt from the same source. The sides of the trays are taller than the pen dividers and I found that making the "coffins" too deep would make it difficult to remove the pen. I use a paper cutter to cut the strips of felt. I left the top edge of the wooden dividers exposed - easier than trying to fold the felt over the top and also added a bit of visual interest.

Here's a link to a couple of pictures of my finshed box - scroll to the bottom of the page:

Pen2paper,I like your cigar box pen storage cases and I really like the beautiful quilt the boxes are sitting on. Besides vintage pens I love vintage handmade textiles.

Oh well. In case of failure you can always wring the paper to have a nice -albeit somewhat stale- cup of coffee back.

Cappuccino should work. Frothy milk also helps to lubricate the nib. But it has to be made by a barista.

@FineFinerFinest: have you seen this thread? https://www.fountainpennetwor...nging-pelikan-nibs/#comments
    • FineFinerFinest 24 Oct 8:52
No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍
    • Mercian 22 Oct 22:28
@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎
    • FineFinerFinest 21 Oct 4:27
I've had a Pelikan M805 for a couple of years now and cannot get the nib to write without singing. I've worked on dozens of nibs with great success. Ny suggestion about what's going wrong? 😑

I have several Parker Roller Ball & Fiber Tip refills in the original packaging. Where and how do I sell them? The couple that I've opened the ink still flowed when put to paper. Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄
