There are a lot of good ones, but my favorite is the Sheaffer No Nonsense. Although new ones are available, the old ones with a screw top are excellent and can be found for around $10.

I too have an Sheaffer no nonsense in maroon color. Writes well, and Astounding value.post-44357-0-94854800-1324856773.jpg

  • 2 weeks later...

Jinhao 250

Between $2-$3

Btween it, the preppy, and Hero 616, it wins in smoothness hands down. With just enough feedback to be effective.

Monteverde Invincia Black Tie. $17.95 with a close out from a store with converter. I use Noodlers ink ottoman rose in it with a medium nib. Want a fine nib but don't know where to get one. My other is a Monteverde Regata blue/yellow with converter for $22. Cheap? I understand I got lucky. But they are my first F.P. since 1985.

$35 beater Parker 51. Looks like hell... but it writes like an angel just kissed the paper.

Fast, Cheap, Good... you can choose two.

Fake Hero 616s (the ones that say 'Parker "51"' and 'Made in Janesville, Wisconsin') were $8 each at the flea market a few weeks ago. I got me several. All are fine writers.

My Wality piston filler has worked nicely. The Noodler's Ahab is flexy fun! My Esterbrooks are best value for vintage pens.

A Kaigelu 316. The nib writes a bit dry before being tweaked, but who can argue with a Parker Duofold Centennial pen in size shape & desirability for $21.99 inc shipping worldwide as an e-bay BIN (and the auctions can be less)? Look at E-Bay seller YCPENS http://stores.ebay.co.uk/YCPENS .

The $27 Danitrio Classic that I bought from windoc a few years ago. It's pearly white with gold Greek key trim - beautiful to look at and writes better than some of my expensive pens. It's a nice hefty weight - I like hefty pens. Sometimes I think if the house was on fire and I had to grab one pen, it would be this one.

So many pens, so little time!

Lamy Safari, for sure.

Although a friend of mine bought himself a no-name eBay special that writes REALLY well, I was shocked when he let me try it out. I think he gave $5 for it.

Smoooooth, cheap, reliable, comfortable, looks great, Lamy Safari in metallic blue....$27.50! I keep wanting to carry at least 4 others which are all at least 20 times as expensive, but keep taking this on my travels. What a great cheap pen.

I love cheap pens because you can try more of them (and inks and paper) for your money! To me, cheap means under $10.My favorites include:Pilot Petit1, Series 1 and 2 (Series 2 has finer nibs than Series 1)Platinum PreppyPilot BirdiePilot 78GPilot PlumixI have a bunch of Pilot Varsities/V-Pens but I find the ink too watery and the nibs too broad for my taste - that's why I left them off the list. But I do think they are great cheap starter pens, and good for FP "witnessing" to non-converts. That said, I've given my dad two Preppys and my sister, one Petit1 in an effort to win them over :)

Well if your going to be that way, I scored a Parker 51 Vac for $10, but had to restore it and solvent weld a crack, but man is it ever a sweet writer....
