Pilot Cocoon - same nib as 78G, smooth fine nib, but I prefer the click cap and contemporary look of the Cocoon.

Lamy Safari is OK, but even the fine nib writes much to broad for me.

My least-expensive (i:e "cheapest") would be my Jinhao 950 Noblest Porcelain... I would highly recommend that... great pen.

Favorite Ink and Pen Combinations:

Monteverde Jewelria in Fine with Noodlers Liberty's Elysium

Jinhao x450 with a Goulet X-Fine Nib with Noodlers Liberty's Elysium

Lamy Al-Star BlueGreen in Extra Fine with Parker Quink Black

Pilot Metropolitan in Medium with Parker Quink Black

Each of the Kaigelu 333, Guider Jumbo and Ranga Model 3 (with factory-supplied Conklin nib) cost me circa USD 20. Seriously impressive inexpensive pens. The Guider and Ranga are ED, write wet and you can easily lose yourself writing and doodling endlessly on weekends (my 11-year old younger son and I do that a lot) :)

I love my Pilot Petit 1's (blue/black, apple green and apricot) and Kaweco Ice (bright yellow, medium nib). They all write great, look bright and cheerful, and dont make my bank balance hurt even a little bit.

Pilot V-Pen

Although I don't quite like the ink that came with it, the pen is reliable, and can be refilled with the help of pliers.

My Sailor Professional Gear with EF nib.

Honored to be part of a group where members for whom Sailor Professional Gear pens categorize as inexpensive exist.

Nemosine Singularity Demonstrator 0.6mm stub!!! Picked it up on Amazon for around $20, switched it to an eyedropper fill and it is now my daily writer.

A $17 Duke. Has worked flawlessly since the day I got it. Also have had good luck with Jinhao 750's, got 2 for less than $10 and both are decent pens. Not just the feel in the hand but they write pretty well also. They don't *feel* cheap at all.

Also you can't go wrong with a LAMY AL-Star, but there you're getting into the $20 range.

I just got one of these, too, and am really liking it. Smooth nib and some attractive line variations. I went for the pink one instead of the demonstrator.

I consider "cheap" to be $20 and under. And as many have said before:

Pilot Varsity—$2–3. Writes as well or better than most pens I've used. Very competent and tough to beat at that price-point.

The G78 is a great deal at $10 and it feels and looks a good bit nicer, but I don't think it's any better at writing than the Varsity. The Varsity doesn't skip, burp, hiccup—nothing. You can leave it lying around for months (in a recent case, well over a year), pick it up and it writes like you used it fifteen minutes ago.

I don't know if I've already said this; I can't find my post, but the Baoer 388 is by far the nicest pen I have considering the inexpensive price. It's smooth, buttery to write with, feels great in my hand and looks nice too.
