My first modern-day pen since school daze was wicked smooth out of the box, a Dilli with Flexi nib from Fountain Pen Revolution. I thought it was great to write with from the first. Now I have had the good fortune to try out some other extremely smooth pens and realize I was right; that's one fine writer!

The Pilot Metropolitan is currently my best inexpensive pen.

My Airmail Jumbo demonstrator that I paid $5 for brand new. It needed a nib smoothing but thankfully it was within my ability to fix.

Kaweco Sport Classic for its smooth nib and small light body.

Baoer 388 again for the great smooth nib and the gorgeousness of the red striped version.

I love my Pilot 78G with B (ie. italic) nib. Best $10 I ever spent. My Kaweco Sport is always with me. It looks like it was buried in gravel, but writes like a dream.

Sheaffer Fineline. Was a big surprise after I bought it. Currently in it's 2nd consecutive week of rotation, a real rarity. But such a pleasure to write with.

You aren't kidding. I got a NOS Sheaffer Fineline in blue for $17 shipped on the Bay last year - came in box with the pencil, writes quite well. I just took it out of storage because I needed a beater pen for some funky German inks that gum up my Vacs, and I'm pleasantly surprised at how well it handles.

My Sailor High Ace Neo has been my favourite cheap pen. It has an extraordinarily fine nib and is surprisingly smooth for the price (with a little bit of feedback, but assuredly not the bad kind). The pen was sturdy and fairly durable and never skipped.

Lamy 2000 is probably the one i use the most, follwed by a 580 and v 700

But I would not consider these pens as cheap pens.....

Franklin Covey Freemont - on sale at Staples for $15...it writes like a dream on any paper with any ink! Very frustrating given I've just sent a Pelikan 205 and Platinum 3776 to have their nibs adjusted...

My Pilot 78G with B nib. It was my first fountain pen.

This is my best pen out of the 18 I have: a blue Ohto "Dude". Hex barrel, fine point, it is the most reliable pen I have.

under 100 dollars is cheap!

Ok, personal perception is for each person different.

For me a pen up to 20-25 € is cheap (and you can get very good pens for this money)

I doubt you can get a new Lamy 2000 for under 100$ ;)
