Hero 616 Cap Mod

Good thread in 2011, now good in 2016! (At least for those of us that regularly write with a 616... ;-) )

I've played with mine a bit but didn't want to force anything..... how did you disassemble the cap?

Thanks!

They are now selling the 616-2 with a colored jewel and a gold clip over steel cap. The hero 100 can be found on the bao (aka Taobao) with a standard gold clip and steel cap and gold barrel end jewel.

Oh! So that's what I bought!

I got a Hero 616 from a certain vendor, and I was surprised to see that it had a tiny jewel on the top of the cap. It also has the "gold" clip on the steel cap. I was wondering why it looked different from my other Hero 616s.

I have it in a box, and I have a note on it that says that it, "Leaks like mad!" The box is my "Fountain Pens With Problems" box. Totally awful fountain pen. I had bought three Hero 616s from the same vendor yeas ago, and all three leaked like mad. So now I have four from him and he's batting 1,000 with them, a negative 1,000. At least I didn't pay as much this time as I'd paid for each defective Hero 616 years ago  .

After reading this thread maybe I'll swap out that new cap for the old one. I have a Hero 616, bought as part of a 10 pack from a Chinese vendor years ago, that I use for a particular ink. So that pen might get the new cap. And I'll see if that new cap is somehow defective too, I suppose.

On a sacred quest for the perfect blue ink mixture!

Hey Fountain Pen People,

First ever post - woo!

Is there a guide somewhere on how to disassemble a 616's cap? I got some Hero 616 Jumbo/Doctor pens in the post the other day and would love to give this a go. The gold cap with the silver clip makes me think of Metropolis for some reason.

Also, what is the 'gold' cap made of? Particularly, does the gold finish wear off? I'm just cautious after my Parker IM's gold trim all rubbed away after about two months of light day-to-day use.

"Keep Writing"

There was a guide, but the link seems to be broken now. If you scroll down this old blog post, you can see the clip is held between the cap jewel and inner cap, which screw together. Sliding a piece of paper under the clip beforehand will keep it from marking the cap as you take it apart, and blutack helps grip the cap jewel.

Hey Flounder,

Thanks for the link. I'll be sure to give this a go.

Any idea on the 'gold plate' quality on the 'golden' caps? I'd hate to buy a bunch just to have them flake out on me.

Cheers,

I only bought 1 gold cap. The gold cap body sits in a drawer, but the gold clip on my chrome body has held up great. In fact, it outlived the first chrome cap, which got a nasty dent & gouge when it fell off a car roof! The 'goldy' plating is doing well.

And it would be cool to add a gold nib to the rest of the changes to this pen .

I know the Hero 100 gold nib, works to Hero 616 , but where you can find Hero 100 gold nibs.

I love Fountain Pens, with hooded nib in the classic style, Parker 51/61 type .
