I have been following the thread of the icicle conversation, but haven't noted many prices. I know they are going for quite a bit more than the standard models. What price ranges have you seen them in? And were they made during a lot of the years of the production runs of Esterbrooks? I would like to find a bit more history on them. dry.gif

My blue one was $45 and the grey one was about $50 If I remember correctly.

Sheesh, I have no idea what all you folks are drooling over. Icicles are actually misproduced variations of the fantastic ripple Esties, and as such aren't worth much (failed ripples, I think...).

I wish the newbies wouldn't drive up the prices of these mutants as they are actually inferior to the understated beauty of the traditional Estie aesthetics.

And I wish people wouldn't obsess over those rather , ummmm, unattractive grey or black ones, since they are actually in short supply because they weren't particularly attractive in the first place (and therefore not produced in significant numbers).

Gee Steve - such a *plain* pen - but thanks anyway for the pic...

And, since I'm really a supporter of poor pen collectors who have, unfortunately gone wrong, I would be willing to help you mitigate your loss by taking that unfortunate mutated grey off your hands for a moderate sum to help defray your losses in whatever transaction you participated in to acquire it.

I mean, it's the least I can do to help a fellow collector while he finds his way in this dog eat dog world... wink.gif

Regards (hoping for an email offer....)

  • 1 month later...

I have a nearly mint silver J icicle if someone is interested for trade. I bought it because it had a 9314-F nib in it which I really wanted. The pen is in great shape, the nib has been removed but I can put one of my not so good writing nibs in it if you'd like. I'd preferably like to trade for a couple of early single jewel transitional as I'd like to work towards completing my collection. I find I like the fatter single jeweled models more myself.

Info on pen:

Double jewels in what appear to be perfect condition

New sac and pressure bar

Clip and rings all solid and clean, free of scratches blemishes and rust

The only scratch I can see is a tiny 1/8th inch surface scratch on the cap but some polishing would easily take this out.

Even the inside of the cap is free of ink

I've never inked this pen and when it arrived to me I replaced the old sac because it was brittle but it was mostly clear/yellow I think there was slight inking signs in it but I never paid much attention.

If your interested let me know what you got to trade via email at turbo(dot)steve@yahoo(dot)com replace all (dot)'s with a .

the black icicle is by far the rarest and can command high premiums when found.

Ok, this is killing me. Nobody got the black icicle joke? Or everyone is just taunting me.

I don't want to see on a pen board somewhere, "Brian said there's this rare black icicle...."

Joke? Joke?

C'mon Brian - *I* can see the stripes in the ones I'm collecting...

See - right there - no, over just a touch... that midnight black line down the plain black body...

It takes an expert to really tell that they're there (and I'd be glad to help anyone who wants to buy one of my black icicles) but we're here to help, aren't we Bryan? cool.gif

Best regards,

Gerry

You have to be careful of those black icicle ones; you can be writing along and wham it slides right off the side ofthe paper into the woods...of your desk. At least the others appear slippery and you can anticipate it...

I got your sarcasm Brian, although it took a few moments first time I was reading through it. wink.gif

Watch somewhere own the line we'll find some weird prototype icicle or visumaster with alternating strips of not quite similar black plastic.

Then we can see, "See, Brian was right all along".

Hey, stranger things have happened, I've picked up some pretty weird unrecorded models in the past twelve months.
