Strange Icicles

Nancy

Recommended Posts

I have several icicles and have a couple that really puzzle me. One is shorter that the usual LJ length. That one, I can sort of understand. But, the other one is really wierd! Is it a frankenpen? Or just an oddity? It is the normal icicle green color, but the pinstripes are not regular. Maybe it was at the very end of production. And the lever is one I've never seen on an Estie. Even the Estie imprint goes around the barrel by the threads. Then, look at the section - too long. and there's a seam in the plastic like it's really cheaply made. The imprint says made in the USA.

And while I'm at it, another question... I have a couple of icicles that are 'normal' but have no imprint on the barrel. It doesn't look like they've been sanded or had anything done to remove it.

I'm trying to attach a photo - hope this works.

Yeah, there are a number of different variations of these, and the green LJ is probably one of the later versions. You can find them in SJ size too, like your other green one shows, but they don't seem to be as common. Everything you describe, oddities and all, are normal when it comes to icicles. :)

Yeah, just ask Antonios, he'll tell you all about the icicle variations! There are probably dozens of different combinations.

Hi Nancy,

Join the club :) First of all - nice pens and the green SJ is extra cute :)

The second form the left does not appear to be an icicle to me - maybe I am wrong.

The section of the long green is strange. I have to recheck all my pens. I will let you know.

In the mean time here is some of mine. First of all 1-3-5 from the left are very very late production. No 2 from left is from Mexico and No 8 (all the way to the right) is from England. No #4 says Made in USA. It is a very strange plastic. The body is almost close to a solid red rather than the icicle pattern. There are only faint sings of dark lines.

#6 is also unusual - that's all I know.

And this one is coming home soon :) "Funny" things about it: it sports the pointy jewels that were meant for ball points, and has no imprint. An apprentice's job maybe or the result of the previous night hangover ? ;)

You're right - that blue one is just an LJ thrown in for size comparison.

I saw that grey pen and wondered about the pointy ends. If it were a repair job, I would suspect one end and not the other might be pointy by mistake, but both?? I am starting to suspect Esterbrook was using up whatever they had on hand to put these last pens together.

Nice pens! I have yet to find an Icicle at a decent price. I also saw that grey one with the weird jewels on ebay... very strange.

I have but two Icicles (blue and grey). Based on this post, I have a long way to go. When I do see one it usually goes beyond my budget. AH well, what's life without a few challenges. Nice pens and thanks for sharing.

Those don't look like any Esties I have (unfortunately). Mine are more like the blue one pictured, except for the black of course. Those are really sharp!!!! :P

If I'm reading that nib correctly - 2314-F? - then Richard Binder has them for $15:

  • 1 month later...

I have been following the thread of the icicle conversation, but haven't noted many prices. I know they are going for quite a bit more than the standard models. What price ranges have you seen them in? And were they made during a lot of the years of the production runs of Esterbrooks? I would like to find a bit more history on them. dry.gif

On eBay they have been selling between $20-$80 lately, averaging at about $40-50--I know that's a pretty big range, but it really all depending on the condition of the pen, the color, the seller's presentation, and the bidders' desire to purchase.

As far as production... Brian or Antonios will know more about that than I do. smile.gif

Stephen's got it about dead on, expect the green to go for more since it is such a different green than anything else they produced (and is lovely!), the black icicle is by far the rarest and can command high premiums when found.
